El Gouna, if kitesurfing decides the trip: its schools sit on shallow lagoon beaches, and its dive boats reach the Abu Nuhas wrecks as a mid-distance run. Hurghada, for the Giftun islands, the liveaboard fleets, a published coworking space and an ordinary city. The two are 22 to 25 km apart, share one airport, and each has a recompression chamber.

El Gouna vs Hurghada dive sites: Abu Nuhas to the north, Giftun to the south

The two towns sit on the same stretch of coast, so most of the difference in diving is which end of it a day boat reaches cheaply. El Gouna's boats start further north. Blue Brothers Diving, based at Cooks Club El Gouna, prices Abu Nuhas, Umm Usk, Siyul and Umm Gamar as medium-distance trips with a €15 surcharge and Gubal as long-distance at €25, as of October 2026. Abu Nuhas is the reef with four wrecks on it, and from El Gouna it is a normal day out with a supplement.

From Hurghada the same reef is a special trip. Two Hurghada centers publish their site lists: Tauchen Hurghada names 48 sites, Subex Hurghada publishes its own, and Abu Nuhas is on neither. Both lists lean south and east instead: the Giftun islands, with the channel between Big and Small Giftun, the Abu Ramada reefs, Carless Reef, the Fanadir reefs, and the El Mina wreck in Hurghada bay at 20 to 32 m. A PADI blog puts Abu Nuhas a three-hour boat ride from Hurghada; Divernet's El Gouna guide puts it an hour from El Gouna. Those are magazine figures, not timetables, but they point the same way.

The middle is shared. Shaab el Erg and Umm Gamar appear on the Hurghada lists and on El Gouna's price list. For a diver, El Gouna wins on the northern wrecks and Hurghada on the Giftun side. The Hurghada diving guide covers the town's mooring buoys and what its operator register proves.

Kitesurfing in El Gouna vs Hurghada: lagoon beaches, gate passes and kite safaris

Kitesurfing is where El Gouna pulls ahead. The town's own guide lists its kite centers on beaches inside the resort, and the details are practical. KBC El Gouna describes a private beach over 800 m wide next to a standing-depth lagoon of several square kilometers. Its house rules reserve the first 50 m for launching and landing, keep lessons north of the open riding area, and confine kiting and wing foiling to a 600 m radius around the station. The rescue boat works only behind the reef, because the lagoon is too shallow for it.

Bring your own gear and you still pay to use a beach. The DUOTONE Kitecenter at Casa Cook says guests with their own equipment must register and pay a day-use fee at the kiting station. That is the El Gouna model: the beaches are run by centers, not open coast.

Staying in Hurghada and driving up has a catch. El Gouna is a gated town. SickDog, a kite operator based in Hurghada, wrote in April 2026 that non-residents now need official permission to enter, requested through a beach club the day before, with the guards checking for your name. This is one operator's account, not a published rule; ask your kite school before you plan a daily commute.

Hurghada's own kite trade looks different. Six kite schools are on its list, one of them named for El Gouna, and kite cruises such as SickDog's run out of Hurghada. On those boats, Egypt's diving chamber sets written rules: the activity must be on the boat's license, riders must hold a certificate from an approved organization, a CDWS-carded instructor must be aboard at a ratio of 12 riders per instructor, and “Beginner courses and trainings are not allowed on board of the safari trips.” Learn in a lagoon first. The guide to learning to kitesurf covers how long that takes.

Hurghada airport wind by month, and what it says about El Gouna's kite season

The nearest long wind record is the airport's. NOAA's Integrated Surface Database holds hourly reports for Hurghada International from 2015 to 2024. Averaged over daytime hours, 10:00 to 17:59 Egyptian standard time, the station shows a clear summer peak:

MonthDaytime meanHours at 12 kn or moreHours at 15 kn or more
January10.2 kn40%16%
February10.5 kn41%20%
March11.8 kn50%29%
April11.2 kn45%26%
May11.5 kn47%26%
June13.7 kn63%36%
July12.5 kn55%31%
August14.1 kn67%44%
September14.0 kn70%40%
October11.4 kn49%21%
November9.6 kn33%12%
December9.8 kn35%14%

June to September is the season, and August and September are the best of it. November and December are the weak months. North was the most frequent daytime direction in every month of the record. These figures are our own calculation from the station data, so treat them as the airport's wind, not a beach forecast.

The beaches report more. El Gouna's town guide gives an average of 15 to 20 knots for its kite spot, and Kite Power El Gouna says its own weather station counts about 77% of days a year as rideable. An anemometer at an airport and a beach chosen for wind measure different things. Use the table for the shape of the year and the schools for the strength.

Recompression chambers in El Gouna and Hurghada: three on the coast

Both towns have a chamber, and Hurghada has two. The Chamber of Diving and Water Sports keeps a list of medical facilities. It names El Gouna Deco International, “in El-Gouna hospital, 22 km north of Hurghada”, and two in Hurghada: HyperMed, “in front of Hurghada Airport”, and the Naval Hyperbaric Medical Center on El Corniche Road in Sekala.

El Gouna Hospital says its diving and hyperbaric center treats decompression emergencies in a chamber with capacity for nine patients, staffed by diving medicine specialists, and that its emergency room runs 24/7. Deco International lists its hotline as open 24/7/365. HyperMed says it has treated diving accidents since 2007, gives its address as 3 Airport Road, and offers “emergency coverage 24/7 for all divers”.

So neither base is far from treatment. Ask your center which chamber its emergency plan names; the CDWS audit manual requires a written plan at each dive site with data on chamber availability. Check too that your dive insurance pays for evacuation, because the UK government warns that Egyptian authorities “will only start rescue operations when they are guaranteed payment”.

Dive licenses and the 2025 reef reserve: the same rules in El Gouna and Hurghada

The rules do not change at El Gouna's gate. Egypt's Ministry of Tourism licenses dive centers, and a center needs membership of the Chamber of Diving and Water Sports to get and renew that license. The number a shop quotes is the Chamber's membership number. Every center in both towns is audited against the same manual, which the Sharm vs Hurghada comparison breaks down into checks you can make on the boat.

What is new is the reef itself. Egypt's Environmental Affairs Agency lists the Great Fringing Reefs as a protected area declared in 2025 under Prime Minister's Decree No. 4419, 1,800 km² in the Red Sea governorate, of the sustainable-use type. HEPCA, the Hurghada conservation group that has installed over 1,000 mooring buoys in the Red Sea, describes it as covering Egypt's shoreline for roughly 2,000 km and the reefs of about 44 islands. It adds that the declaration “does not mean preventing tourism or marine activities”.

Neither the agency's list nor HEPCA's announcement names a fee or a new rule for divers, as of October 2026. Blue Brothers already folds an environmental tax and port fees into its El Gouna prices; ask a Hurghada center whether its quote does the same.

Visas and long stays in El Gouna or Hurghada

One airport, one visa regime. Egypt's e-visa portal, run by the Ministry of Interior, lists one category for visitors, tourism, at US$30 single entry or US$65 multiple entry, and asks for a passport valid six months from arrival. The UK's travel advice says tourist e-visas are valid for up to three months, while a visa bought on arrival at an approved airport costs US$30 in cash and is valid for up to 30 days.

The free Sinai stamp does not help here. It covers arrivals at Sharm El-Sheikh staying under 15 days in Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, and Hurghada is not on it. For longer, the UK advice points to extensions at Egypt's Passport and Immigration offices and warns of a fine if you leave on a visa expired by more than 14 days. The portal lists no remote-work category, so a month of work from either town runs on a tourist visa.

Living in El Gouna vs Hurghada for a month of remote work

Hurghada is a city, El Gouna a managed resort town, and that shapes a working week more than the diving does. Coworking Hurghada in Kawther publishes its offer: a nine-hour day pass at EGP 600 and a four-hour pass at EGP 400, with up to 70 Mbps wired and wireless, as of October 2026. It was running a summer sale at half price when read.

El Gouna's town guide lists a workspace for digital nomads at Riah Kite Academy, on the beach. That suits a kite-first month: work, ride the afternoon wind, repeat. The town sits under 40 minutes from the airport on its own figures; Blue Brothers puts the drive at about 32 km and 30 to 45 minutes. The El Gouna guide covers the town itself.

The gate is the trade-off. Inside El Gouna, everything is close. Living in Hurghada and kiting in El Gouna means a drive and, by one operator's account, a permission each time. Pick the side of the gate your main sport is on.

What the UK travel advice says about Hurghada and Red Sea dive boats

The Foreign Office treats this coast as low risk. Its regional page says “Travel to Red Sea tourist areas in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula is generally low risk” and that security forces run routine checks “to protect resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam”. El Gouna is not named. The advice against travel covers North Sinai, parts of South Sinai, the western desert and the border zones, not the coast at Hurghada.

On the water it is blunter. “Safety standards of Red Sea resort diving operators and boats vary considerably,” it says, citing recent incidents with British divers, some fatal. It advises booking through a reputable operator, asking for a full safety briefing on liveaboards, and not diving below your insurance policy's depth limit, which “will invalidate your cover”. That applies on both sides of the gate.

Hurghada's list is six times longer, and some of it is liveaboard fleets rather than shops. El Gouna's is the more kite-heavy of the two. The one Green Fins member is Blue Brothers Diving, a Certified Silver Member assessed in person, which Green Fins files under Hurghada and the CDWS under El Gouna. Green Fins scores environmental practice, not safety. The El Gouna operator list and the Hurghada operator list name every business with its source.

El Gouna for kite days and Abu Nuhas, Hurghada for Giftun and a city

Base in El Gouna if you kite or wing foil, or are learning to: the lagoons, the center-run beaches and the summer wind are the reason to come. Divers who want the northern wrecks without the long run from Hurghada also do better here. The price is the gate, and a resort town around you.

Base in Hurghada if diving is the main sport and work matters, if you want the Giftun reefs and a choice of liveaboards, or if you would rather live in a city than a resort. Kite in El Gouna on the good days, with the permission sorted. Divers comparing further afield can read Hurghada vs Marsa Alam for the southern coast, or the Safaga diving guide for the next town south.

FAQ: El Gouna vs Hurghada

Is El Gouna or Hurghada better for diving?

It depends on the reefs you want. El Gouna's boats reach the Abu Nuhas wrecks as a medium-distance trip and Gubal as a long one. Hurghada's centers dive the Giftun islands, Abu Ramada and the El Mina wreck, and Abu Nuhas is not on their published site lists. Both run under the same CDWS audit.

Is El Gouna better than Hurghada for kitesurfing?

Yes, for most riders. El Gouna's kite centers sit on shallow lagoon beaches inside the town; KBC, for one, keeps a launch zone, a lesson area and a rescue boat behind the reef. Bringing your own gear can mean a day-use fee. Hurghada has six kite schools on our list, and kite cruises run from there, where beginner courses are not allowed.

How far is El Gouna from Hurghada airport?

El Gouna says it is 25 km from Hurghada and less than 40 minutes from Hurghada International Airport. Blue Brothers Diving gives the drive as about 32 km and 30 to 45 minutes. Non-residents arriving at El Gouna's gate may need a permission arranged in advance, according to one Hurghada kite operator.

Is there a decompression chamber in El Gouna or Hurghada?

Both. El Gouna Hospital has a hyperbaric chamber for nine patients and a 24/7 emergency room. Hurghada has HyperMed, on the airport road with 24/7 emergency cover, and the Naval Hyperbaric Medical Center in Sekala. All three appear on the CDWS list of medical facilities.

Can you stay a month in El Gouna or Hurghada on a tourist visa?

Yes. Egypt's tourist e-visa costs US$30 single entry or US$65 multiple entry, and the UK advice says tourist e-visas are valid for up to three months. A visa bought on arrival costs US$30 and is valid for up to 30 days. Extensions go through Egypt's Passport and Immigration offices.
