What October gives you on the water
October is a pivot: half these places are opening and half are closing, so timing within the month matters more than usual. October is the pivot month. Indonesia's season closes as the Red Sea and the Andaman coast open, and Europe's Atlantic coast gets its best swell of the year. Every base here is included because its own guide names October as part of its working window, not because the weather is generally nice, and where a place is marginal we say so rather than padding the list to a round number.

The season is not over, and the light is going fast
October is the month people assume the tropical season has finished. It has not. The National Hurricane Center's 1991–2020 progress table has the average Atlantic season reaching its eleventh named system on 2 October and its thirteenth on 25 October, three more named storms after the end of September: and the official season runs to 30 November. In the western North Pacific the Japan Meteorological Agency's October normal is 3.4, still ahead of June's 1.7. October is a shoulder month by crowd, not by weather.
What changes fastest in October is daylight, and at high latitude it changes at a rate that catches people out. At Unstad in Lofoten the Naval Observatory has the sun up 07:17 to 18:31 on 1 October, which is 11 h 14 min, and 08:09 to 17:32 on the 15th, 9 h 23 min. Nearly two hours of daylight gone in a fortnight, and the loss keeps accelerating: at that latitude the sun does not rise at all by mid-December, and in June and July it does not set.
In practice that means an October cold-water trip is planned around the light, not the tide. One long session, not two.

When does the Similan season start?
Mu Ko Similan National Park is open roughly 15 October to 15 May and closes for the monsoon, so October is the reopening. The best conditions inside that window run December to April.
Is October good for diving the Red Sea?
It is the start of the prime window: Marsa Alam's best diving runs October through May, with water around 22 to 28C and visibility frequently over 30m. Oceanic whitetips, its calling card, are most numerous from roughly October to December.
