West Palm Beach Diving: A Bridge That Runs on the Tide and a Gulf Stream That Moves the Boat

Key takeaways
- Blue Heron Bridge has two published tide windows, and on NOAA's 2026 predictions they overlap from roughly 20 to 60 minutes after high tide
- Palm Beach County allows diving at Phil Foster Memorial Park from sunrise to sunset only, bars spear guns in park waters and closes the lot at capacity
- The six wrecks nearest the Lake Worth Inlet on the state list sit at 76 to 97 feet, and shops price a two-tank charter from $120 with your own tanks
- Adult lemon sharks gather off Jupiter in winter, and Florida bars divers from feeding fish and for-hire boats from showing it
- Lionfish need no license with a pole spear, Hawaiian sling or handheld net, yet permits to spear them in no-spear zones go only to organized events of ten or more
Blue Heron Bridge turns West Palm Beach diving into a tide-table problem
The best-known dive in West Palm Beach is not in West Palm Beach. Blue Heron Bridge stands in Riviera Beach, and you walk in from Phil Foster Memorial Park at 900 E. Blue Heron Boulevard. The county says squid, octopus, spotted rays and starfish are regularly seen there. Force-E and the training agency SDI both give depths of 5 to 20 feet.
Force-E places the site just inside the Lake Worth Inlet, and that decides everything. SDI says clear Atlantic water arrives around high tide, with visibility up to 100 feet at best, and that outside the window you risk heavy currents. The inlet sets the schedule.
The two published windows do not match. SDI says half an hour before or after slack high tide. Force-E says an hour before to an hour after high tide. The county's park page gives no window at all.
NOAA's 2026 predictions narrow it. Slack and high tide are different moments here. At NOAA's North Turning Basin current station, the slack after the incoming flow comes a median 48 minutes after the predicted high at the Port of West Palm Beach. At the Lake Worth Inlet Entrance station the lag is 50 minutes.
Lay that lag over both rules and they overlap from roughly 20 to 60 minutes after predicted high tide. Neither station sits at the bridge, and the basin lag ran from 16 minutes before high to 71 after across the year. Treat the overlap as a starting point.
NOAA predicts peak flows at that basin station averaging 0.87 knots on the flood and 0.99 on the ebb, reaching about 1.4 knots. High tides also arrive about 50 minutes later each day, so a free morning this week can be a dead one next week.
Palm Beach County's Blue Heron Bridge rules: daylight only, no spear guns, a lot that closes when full
The county says: “Diving is permitted from sunrise to sunset outside of the guarded swimming area.” After hours, anyone not launching or retrieving a boat counts as trespassing.
Night dives run through a permit. The county's Dive Instruction Permit covers instruction and guided groups by day or night, costs $150 plus tax for an in-county individual and $600 plus tax for one from out of county, and requires at least $1,000,000 of insurance. Holders must be out of the water and out of the park by 10:00 p.m. A visitor's route is a shop: Force-E says it runs free night dives every two weeks under its permit.
Parking can end your day before the tide does. The park has 206 regular spaces and 127 reserved for boat trailers. Once it reaches capacity, enforcement staff close access and vehicles may not queue at the entrance. Dive boats may not work from the park without a county contract.
Check the water as well as the tide. On 4 November 2026 the county's page carried a swim advisory for the park, pointing to the state's Healthy Beaches program, without saying what it means for divers. The county's daily conditions line is 561-624-0065.
You also need a flag. Section 327.331 of the Florida Statutes says “All divers must prominently display a divers-down warning device”, except in areas customarily used for swimming only. The stay-close distance is 100 feet on rivers, inlets and navigation channels and 300 feet on other waters. SDI puts the boat channel about 100 feet off the shore, so plan on the shorter figure.
West Palm Beach boats drift because the Gulf Stream runs so close
Offshore, plan on moving with the water. Kajiura and Tellman, writing in PLOS ONE, describe “the narrow shelf and close proximity of the Gulf Stream current to the Palm Beach County shoreline”, and their map shows the broad shelf narrowing dramatically in this county. A Scuba Diving magazine feature puts that shelf at about 5 miles wide. Pura Vida sells the result as drift diving over reefs and wrecks.
The shops running these trips sit in Riviera Beach and on Singer Island. Pura Vida's posted rates on 4 November 2026 were $120 for a two-tank charter with your own tanks and $150 with air tanks, $90 and $105 for one tank, and $150 and $195 for three tanks with lunch. Active dive accident insurance takes $10 off some of them.
The same shop offers something stranger. Every week Pura Vida runs one-tank blackwater drift dives at night in the Gulf Stream, where by its description animals from hundreds of feet down rise to feed. It charges $120, or $150 with an air tank, and asks for an Advanced Open Water or Night Diver rating. It does not tether divers.
The wrecks are mostly deliberate. Palm Beach County says it has deployed over 49 vessels, 110,000 tons of concrete and 140,000 tons of limestone boulders across the past 40 years. The state list of 6 March 2026 holds 154 Palm Beach records, from Boca Raton to Jupiter. These six lie closest to the Lake Worth Inlet, all within about 2.5 miles of its entrance:
| West Palm Beach wreck | Vessel | Deployed | Depth | Relief |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Danny McCauley Reef | 110-foot steel tug | 22 Feb 2013 | 76 ft | 25 ft |
| Mizpah | 185-foot yacht | 8 Apr 1968 | 82 ft | 19 ft |
| PC-1174 | 165-foot patrol craft | 9 Apr 1968 | 82 ft | 14 ft |
| Amaryllis | 440-foot freighter | 22 Aug 1968 | 82 ft | 27 ft |
| Ana Cecilia | 170-foot cargo ship | 13 Jul 2016 | 87 ft | 31 ft |
| Princess Anne | 340-foot ferryboat | 23 May 1993 | 97 ft | 30 ft |
None of these is a shallow dive, so ask each boat what certification it wants. The state list also runs the other way. Peanut Island has limestone in 5 feet, and the Singer Island Mitigation Site holds 9,852 tons in 8 feet. The Phil Foster snorkel trail is 600 tons of rock in 6 to 10 feet by the county's count, and 613 tons in 15 feet on the state list. Our drift diving guide sets this coast against others.

Jupiter's winter lemon sharks are a research finding, not a West Palm Beach guarantee
The strongest shark claim here comes with careful wording. Kessel and colleagues, in a 2010 conference abstract, say large groups of adult lemon sharks are “annually present off the coast of Jupiter, Florida, during the winter months”. They add that the sharks “appear to have a water temperature preference of ~23/24°C”, which sets the timing. Jupiter's listed wrecks lie about 13 miles north of the Lake Worth Inlet.
The timing data holds up at small scale. A 2022 Nova Southeastern thesis tagged six sharks off Jupiter and found all tagged sharks around Jupiter from December to May and absent from June to November. Walt Stearns, a photographer who reports finding the groups in January 2001, writes that more than 97 percent of detections off Jupiter fell between December and April.
Stearns also argues the aggregations keep getting smaller, an advocate's account in a piece pressing for fishery changes. The FACT telemetry network says tracking confirmed the winter groups before a spring move north, that this compelled Florida to curtail harvest, and that Cape Canaveral to Jupiter is now considered a Habitat Area of Particular Concern.
Do not mix them up with the blacktips. Those are a beach event. Kajiura and Tellman flew the 75.6 km from Boca Raton Inlet to Jupiter Inlet and counted a peak of 12,128 sharks in February 2011, with January to March the high season. A 2026 Florida Atlantic University release puts them within about 50 meters of shore.
The summer animal is the goliath grouper. A 2016 conference abstract surveyed six aggregation sites near Jupiter, timed around lunar peaks in the spawning season. A 2023 account of Ocean First Institute's work, on an expedition out of West Palm Beach, names August and September around the new moon. Sharks in winter, groupers in late summer.
Florida's rule on luring them is blunt. Rule 68B-5.005 says “No diver shall engage in the practice of fish feeding”, and it bars any vessel for hire from carrying passengers to a site in state saltwaters to feed fish or to watch it happen. Emerald Charters lists bull, hammerhead, tiger and lemon sharks and concedes that it cannot “summon sharks on demand”. Ask any boat how it finds them.
Florida spearfishing law off West Palm Beach starts at the bridge
Blue Heron Bridge is the wrong place to carry a spear. The county says “Use of knives or spear guns to capture fish in County park waters is not permitted”, and adds that it owns or manages most of the submerged area around the bridge. Rule 68B-20.003 then bars spearfishing within 100 yards of public bathing beaches, of commercial or public fishing piers, and of “that portion of any bridge where public fishing is legally permitted”.
A separate state closure covers aquarium collecting. Rule 68B-42.0036, in this form since 1 April 2019, says a person may not harvest or possess any tropical ornamental marine life species or plant in the Blue Heron Bridge Special Marine Life Area: the park plus a box of about 1,480 by 1,760 feet of water. The wildlife commission's notice says this does not stop hook-and-line fishing or lobstering. It does not lift the county's knife and spear rule.
Offshore, spearing is lawful subject to bag limits, with a long list of exceptions. Rule 68B-20.005 bans spearing sharks, tarpon, snook, spotted eagle rays, angelfish, butterflyfish and parrotfish, among others. It also names “Jewfish”, Epinephelus itajara, the goliath grouper. Separately, all waters from Martin to Miami-Dade counties are closed to recreational goliath harvest, which takes in Palm Beach.
Lionfish are the exception to nearly all of it. Florida's wildlife commission lists no minimum size, an unlimited daily bag and a year-round season. No recreational license is needed with a pole spear, a Hawaiian sling, a handheld net or a device designed and marketed exclusively for lionfish. Rule 68B-4.012 also lets rebreather divers take lionfish, while barring them from harvesting anything else.
One trap catches solo hunters. Permits to spear non-native fish inside the no-spear zones go only to the director of an organized tournament or event with ten or more registered participants, and last no longer than a week. At the park, the county's department director has the final say on top. Our spearfishing primer covers the basics.
West Palm Beach water temperature swings from 68 to 89°F, and storm season lasts six months
NOAA's Lake Worth Pier station sits on the Atlantic about 12 miles south of the bridge. Hourly readings through 2024 and 2025 average 23.6°C (74°F) in January, 23.8 in February, 24.2 in March, 25.4 in April, 27.5 in May, 28.7 in June, 29.8 in July, 30.4°C (87°F) in August, 30.3 in September, 27.7 in October, 26.6 in November and 25.3 in December. The coldest hour was 20.2°C and the warmest 31.9°C.
January to March at the pier sits right at the 23 to 24°C the lemon shark abstract names, which fits the timing without proving it for Jupiter. A pier sensor is not a bottom reading at 90 feet. The travel wetsuit guide covers the choice of suit.
NOAA runs the Atlantic hurricane season from 1 June to 30 November, which takes in the whole goliath window. Outside storms the place keeps working, and Force-E lists seven-day shop hours.
A bent diver in West Palm Beach calls 911 first and DAN second
The emergency order is settled. Divers Alert Network says to call 911 or the local equivalent, or get the person to the nearest medical facility, and then to call its hotline on +1-919-684-9111, staffed 24 hours a day. On the water, the county's inlet advice is to monitor VHF channel 16.
The chamber question is less tidy. Baptist Health South Florida says it treats decompression sickness in hyperbaric chambers in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, and that it offers both single and multiplace chambers. Its page does not say which site holds which chamber or who takes an emergency diver at night. Ask the boat which facility its emergency plan names before you leave the dock, and read our dive insurance comparison for what covers treatment.
West Palm Beach works as a base for flights and trains, less for cheap rent
Getting here is the easy part. Palm Beach International's May 2026 fact sheet lists 40+ nonstop destinations, 12 airlines including Air Canada, Porter and Bahamasair, and 200+ daily flights, three miles from downtown. It does not separate seasonal routes from year-round ones.
Tri-Rail's West Palm Beach station, at 203 South Tamarind Avenue, connects south to Fort Lauderdale Airport, Miami Airport and MiamiCentral, and a valid fare gets you a free Palm Tran Route 2 ride to the airport. That matters because the Fort Lauderdale and Miami reefs sit along the same line. Fort Lauderdale vs Miami compares those two.
HUD's fiscal 2026 fair market rents, a voucher-program benchmark rather than an asking price, give $1,910 for a one-bedroom in downtown ZIP 33401 and $1,530 in 33404, the Riviera Beach ZIP that holds Force-E, Ocean Quest and Pura Vida. Budget for a metro area, not a dive town.
West Palm Beach punishes fixed schedules and first drift dives
A fixed schedule is the bridge's main enemy. A week of meetings at the wrong hours can leave you with no daylight tide. The boats ask more: wait if you have never done a drift and want a mooring line to hold, or if your certification stops short of 80 feet. Anyone hoping to hand-feed sharks for a photo is in the wrong state.
For shore diving on open reef instead of an inlet, try our shore diving list. For historic wrecks on park buoys, Miami fits. West Palm Beach suits patient divers who plan around a tide table and like a current.
Four businesses on our West Palm Beach list, and none is in the city itself
Our West Palm Beach operator list holds 4 businesses. Force-E's shop is at 155 East Blue Heron Boulevard in Riviera Beach, Ocean Quest Scuba Charters is at 255 East 22nd Court in Riviera Beach, Pura Vida Divers is on Singer Island, and Starfish Scuba is filed under Boynton Beach. Jupiter's boats, Emerald Charters among them, are not on it.
Three of the four are published by SSI in its register of affiliated centers. Pura Vida holds a Green Fins Digital Membership, which is self-evaluated rather than assessed in person, and names PADI and TDI on its own site. Which registers can be read sets out what each source returns.
West Palm Beach diving questions: tides, night dives, spears and sharks
When is the best time to dive Blue Heron Bridge in West Palm Beach?
Around high tide, in daylight. SDI says half an hour before or after slack high tide, and Force-E says an hour before to an hour after high tide. NOAA's 2026 predictions put slack about 48 to 50 minutes after predicted high at two nearby current stations, so the two windows overlap from roughly 20 to 60 minutes after high.
Can you night dive Blue Heron Bridge?
Not on your own. Palm Beach County permits diving at Phil Foster Memorial Park from sunrise to sunset, and anyone else in the park after hours counts as trespassing unless launching or retrieving a boat. Group night dives run under a county Dive Instruction Permit, with holders out of the park by 10:00 p.m.
Can you spearfish at Blue Heron Bridge in Palm Beach County?
No. The county says use of knives or spear guns to capture fish in county park waters is not permitted, and it owns or manages most of the submerged area around the bridge. State rule 68B-20.003 also bars spearfishing within 100 yards of public bathing beaches, fishing piers and bridge sections open to public fishing.
When can you see lemon sharks while diving off Jupiter, Florida?
In winter. A 2022 Nova Southeastern thesis found tagged sharks around Jupiter from December to May and absent from June to November, and a telemetry account puts more than 97 percent of detections off Jupiter between December and April. No one guarantees a sighting. Florida also bars divers from feeding fish and for-hire boats from carrying passengers to watch it in state saltwaters.
Is there a hyperbaric chamber near West Palm Beach?
Baptist Health South Florida says it treats decompression sickness in hyperbaric chambers in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, but its page does not name which site takes emergency divers. In an emergency call 911 first, or get to the nearest medical facility, and then call the Divers Alert Network hotline on +1-919-684-9111.
Note: Conditions, safety guidance and regulations change. Verify current information with official sources, including the dive operator, the park authority and the relevant government department, before you travel or dive.
