Koh Tao if diving is the reason for the month: Sail Rock is about 23 km off, a Koh Tao shop sells two local dives for 2,000 baht, and our Koh Tao list holds 60 dive centers. Koh Samui if you need the airport, a private hospital and a bigger town, and accept 4,500 to 4,700 baht and a crossing for every Sail Rock day. Lomprayah lists 12 sailings a day from Samui to Tao.

Koh Tao puts Sail Rock and Chumphon Pinnacle on the morning boat

The case for a Koh Tao base starts with geography. Sail Rock, the granite pinnacle Thai marine orders call Hin Bai, stands in open water between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. From the center of Koh Tao it is about 18 km in a straight line. From the center of Koh Samui it is about 50 km. Every Sail Rock day from Samui starts with that extra distance.

One Koh Tao schedule shows what living next to the dive sites buys. On the day this page was written, Big Blue's own booking page listed a morning trip to Sail Rock, Sail Rock again and Shark Island, leaving at 07:30 and back at 16:00, three dives for 4,000 baht. The next morning's boat went to Chumphon Pinnacle and No Name Pinnacle, 07:30 to 12:00, two dives for 2,000 baht. An afternoon boat to Mango Bay and Japanese Gardens cost the same 2,000.

That 2,000-baht half day is the thing Samui does not have. On Koh Tao you can dive a morning, work an afternoon and do it again the next day. A month of that is a different month from one built around full-day crossings.

Diving from Koh Samui means a day boat and a crossing every time

Samui's dive centers sell a full day, not a morning. All three on our Koh Samui list price a two-dive Sail Rock trip, and the figures sit close together. Sons of the Sea asks 4,650 baht, with hotel pickup at 07:45, the boat out at 09:00 and "around 50 to 90 minutes" to the rock. Member Diving showed 4,500, marked down from 5,940, with pickup at 7:00 to 7:30 and "approx. 1 hours" to the rock. The Life Aquatic lists 4,700.

The boats do not go every day. Sons of the Sea sails to Sail Rock on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday; Member Diving on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Member Diving's day ends back on Samui between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. Its Chumphon Pinnacle and Koh Tao trip was priced at 5,500 baht, down from 6,780.

Set side by side, a Sail Rock day from Samui costs 500 to 700 baht more than the three-dive Sail Rock day from Koh Tao, for one dive less and a longer ride. The Koh Samui diving guide covers those trips site by site.

Ang Thong is the Koh Samui dive day Koh Tao cannot copy

Samui has one destination of its own. Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, an archipelago of limestone islands west of Samui, is where Sons of the Sea runs a daily two-dive trip from 4,800 baht, described on its page as "calm, low-impact reef diving". It is the gentler alternative to a granite pinnacle in open water.

A national park brings a fee. The Department of National Parks sorts every park into four fee groups under a regulation in force since 7 June 2022, and Mu Ko Ang Thong is in group 2: 200 baht for a foreign adult, 100 for a child. Ask whether your trip price includes it.

Ang Thong does not change the verdict for a diver, but it does change it for a pair. If one of you dives and the other snorkels or kayaks, a Samui base offers both a park day and a pinnacle day.

Learning to dive: Koh Tao vs Koh Samui is not close for a course

A course is several days in the water in a row, and that is where the crossing hurts. Koh Tao shops publish their prices: Big Blue lists the Open Water course at 12,000 baht, 2.5 days and five dives, and Koh Tao Scuba Club lists 9,500 baht including three nights of accommodation. Our Koh Tao Open Water guide compares six such prices.

On Samui, the trips the three shops on our list publish are full days: Sail Rock, Koh Tao, Chumphon Pinnacle and Ang Thong. A course built on those means a crossing on each sea day, or a training plan you should ask the shop to spell out before you pay.

The number of shops tells the same story. Our Koh Tao list holds 60 dive centers. Samui's holds three. Short version: learn on Koh Tao.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by Lomprayah: 12 sailings out, 8 back

If you base on one island and dive or visit the other, the boat timetable matters more than the distance. Lomprayah, one of the boat operators on this route, publishes a 2026 timetable. It lists 12 departures a day from Samui to Koh Tao from three Samui piers, Pralarn, Bangrak and Nathon, and 8 from Koh Tao back to Samui.

From SamuiArrives Koh TaoBoatFare
08:00 Pralarn09:30Catamaran700 baht
11:00 Pralarn13:30Ferry550 baht
12:15 Nathon14:15Catamaran700 baht
14:30 Pralarn16:00Speedboat700 baht
15:30 Bangrak17:00Direct speedboat700 baht
16:00 Nathon17:45Catamaran700 baht

A selection of the 12, from Lomprayah's 2026 timetable. The quickest crossings take 1 h 30; the slowest, with a change onto a catamaran at Koh Phangan, take 3 h 15.

The other way, the first boat leaves Koh Tao at 07:05, a speedboat reaching Pralarn at 08:30 for 800 baht. The last is the 16:30 ferry, into Pralarn at 19:30 for 550. Seen from Koh Tao, then, Samui is a day trip with a fixed end: you cannot dine on Samui and sleep on Koh Tao.

Airliner on the runway at Samui Airport, the airport for travelers to both Koh Samui and Koh Tao
The runway at Samui Airport, seen from beside Gate 4. Koh Tao has no runway; its air connections run through airports like this one. Photo: Binderdonedat, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0, cropped.

The airport is the main argument for a Koh Samui base

Samui has an airport and Koh Tao does not. That is the whole difference on arrival day. Flying in for Koh Tao means landing elsewhere and taking a boat: Lomprayah sells combined tickets from Samui Airport and from Chumphon's airport on the mainland.

The timetable shows the cost of that in hours. Its fastest through ticket from Koh Tao to Samui Airport is a direct speedboat at 11:30 with a van at the other end, at the airport at 13:30, for 950 baht. Its other through tickets take 2 h 10 to 4 h. For one arrival and one departure in a month, that is a detail.

It stops being a detail if you fly often or work to client deadlines. A sudden trip home, a visa run or a flight change is a taxi ride on Samui. From Koh Tao it is a boat booked a day ahead, and the last boat leaves at 16:30.

Koh Tao's open water takes more of the northeast monsoon than Samui's channel

Both islands share the Gulf's calendar. The rough months are the end of the year, when the northeast monsoon sets in. In November 2025 the Thai Meteorological Department recorded that the monsoon "prevailed over the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region and the Andaman Sea almost the whole month and became rather strong at the end of the month".

The wave model shows the islands do not feel it equally. Monthly means of significant wave height, and the share of model hours with a meter of sea or more:

MonthEast of Koh TaoWest of Sail RockOff Samui's north coast
January0.64 m, 17%0.46 m, 4%0.47 m, 3%

December0.71 m, 17%0.50 m, 5%0.50 m, 5%

Calculated for this page from Météo-France's MFWAM wave model, run for Copernicus Marine on a grid of 1/12° (about 9 km), January 2023 to December 2025. The cells are centered at 10.08° N 99.92° E east of Koh Tao, 9.92° N 99.83° E about 18 km west of Sail Rock, and 9.58° N 100.00° E in the channel between Samui and Koh Phangan. Shares of hours are shares of the model's three-hourly steps.

From March to October the sea around both islands is small; April and October are the calmest months in all three cells. In November one model hour in four off Koh Tao carries a meter of sea or more, against one in fourteen in Samui's channel, and the waves come from the northeast. A cell west of Koh Tao gives almost the same 24%, because a 9 km grid cannot see the shelter a bay gives.

That last point matters for learners. Koh Tao's shops move training to whichever side of the island is calm; the model only describes open water. For crossings and for Sail Rock, though, November and December are the months to keep boat days flexible, and more so on Koh Tao.

Koh Samui and Koh Tao water temperature: one wetsuit for both

On water temperature, Koh Samui vs Koh Tao is a tie. NOAA's satellite sea surface temperature, averaged by month:

MonthKoh TaoWest of Sail RockSamui to PhanganAng Thong
January27.8 °C27.8 °C27.9 °C27.8 °C
March28.9 °C29.0 °C28.9 °C29.2 °C

September29.3 °C29.4 °C29.6 °C29.5 °C
November28.9 °C28.9 °C28.9 °C28.8 °C

Monthly means of NOAA's Optimum Interpolation sea surface temperature, version 2.1, 2021 to 2025, from the monthly-mean file NOAA's Physical Sciences Laboratory publishes. The quarter-degree cells are centered at 10.125° N 99.875° E, 9.875° N 99.875° E, 9.625° N 100.125° E and 9.625° N 99.625° E.

No month differs by more than 0.4 °C between the four cells. January is the coolest month, at about 28 °C, and May the warmest, above 30 °C. A 3 mm suit or a rash guard does for either island all year.

One environmental notification covers the sea of Koh Samui and Koh Tao

The rules on the water do not split the two. A Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment notification, published in the Royal Gazette on 21 May 2025, is in force from 22 May 2025 for five years. Its title names seven subdistricts of Ko Samui district and the Ko Pha-ngan, Ban Tai and Ko Tao subdistricts of Ko Pha-ngan district.

Koh Tao is administratively part of Koh Phangan's district, and SSI files 11 of the 60 businesses on our Koh Tao list under Koh Phangan. For a diver it means one set of bans, on anchoring over reefs and pinnacles among others. The Koh Phangan diving guide sets out the clauses, and the Samui guide where Sail Rock falls in them.

Recompression chamber and hospital: Koh Tao and Koh Samui each have half

Here the comparison splits in an awkward way. The recompression chamber that our Koh Tao and Koh Phangan comparison records for these islands is on Koh Tao itself, run by the SSS chamber network. Samui has a private hospital: Bangkok Hospital Samui lists 30 centers and clinics, among them trauma and emergency, intensive care and a referral center.

Its list names no hyperbaric or diving medicine unit. So a diver hurt off Samui may need to travel to a chamber, and a diver hurt off Koh Tao may need to travel to a hospital. Ask any shop which chamber its emergency plan names and how an injured diver gets there. Then check that your dive insurance pays for the boat or helicopter as well as the treatment.

A month on Koh Samui or Koh Tao: the same visa either way

Both islands are in Surat Thani province, so the paperwork is identical. Since 15 September 2026, the visa exemption for tourism allows a stay of up to 30 days for nationals of 60 countries and territories, under Ministry of Interior announcements published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. A 30-day stay fits; a 31-day month does not.

For longer, the Destination Thailand Visa is the remote worker's route. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives it a validity of five years, multiple entries and 180 days per entry, with one extension of up to 180 days through the Immigration Bureau. Its checklist asks for a bank balance of no less than 500,000 baht over the last three months. The DTV guide covers the documents.

Both lists were compiled on 24 September 2026. The Koh Tao list joins the SSI register and the Green Fins member register; the Samui list is SSI's register alone, so it shows which shops SSI lists there, not how many dive shops Samui has. Green Fins assesses environmental practice, not safety, and its four Digital members filled in a self-evaluation without a visit.

One Koh Tao entry, Black Turtle Dive, publishes a Tourism Authority of Thailand licence number on its own site. Ask any shop on either island for theirs.

Koh Samui vs Koh Tao in five lines

Koh Tao for the dive month, Koh Samui for a base with a flight home

Pick Koh Tao if diving is most of the month, if you are learning or adding a course, or if you want to dive mornings and work afternoons. The Koh Tao guide covers living there. Do not pick it if you will fly in and out several times, or if you are coming in late November and want Sail Rock every day.

Pick Koh Samui if the dives are a weekly treat rather than the routine, if a partner does not dive, or if you need the airport and a full hospital close by. Budget 4,500 baht or more per dive day. Do not pick it to learn.

If Samui is too big and Koh Tao too small, the island between them is in Koh Tao vs Koh Phangan. For the other coast, read Phuket vs Koh Tao, and for the Red Sea alternative, Dahab vs Koh Tao.

FAQ: Koh Samui vs Koh Tao

Is Koh Tao or Koh Samui better for diving?

Koh Tao, for anyone diving most days. Sail Rock is about 23 km from the center of Koh Tao against about 50 km from Samui's, one Koh Tao shop sells two local dives for 2,000 baht, and our Koh Tao list holds 60 dive centers against Samui's 3. Samui suits a weekly dive day at 4,500 to 4,700 baht.

How long is the ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Tao?

1 h 30 on Lomprayah's quickest sailings, up to 3 h 15 with a change at Koh Phangan. Its 2026 timetable lists 12 departures a day from Samui's Pralarn, Bangrak and Nathon piers, at 700 baht by catamaran or speedboat and 550 by ferry. The last boat from Koh Tao to Samui leaves at 16:30.

Can you dive Sail Rock from Koh Samui?

Yes. All three Samui shops on our list run two-dive Sail Rock days, at 4,500 to 4,700 baht on 26 October 2026, and one gives 50 to 90 minutes for the crossing. The two that publish a schedule sail four set days a week. From Koh Tao, one shop sells three dives including Sail Rock twice for 4,000 baht.

Is there an airport on Koh Tao?

No. Travelers fly to Samui Airport or to Chumphon on the mainland and take a boat. Lomprayah's fastest through ticket from Koh Tao to Samui Airport is a direct speedboat at 11:30 with a van at the other end, arriving at 13:30, for 950 baht.

When is the sea roughest around Koh Samui and Koh Tao?

November and December, in the northeast monsoon. In wave-model data for 2023 to 2025, the open sea east of Koh Tao had a meter of sea or more in 25% of November hours, against 7% in the channel off Samui's north coast. April and October are the calmest months.

Is the water warmer around Koh Samui or Koh Tao?

Neither. NOAA satellite data for 2021 to 2025 put both at 27.8 to 27.9  °C in January and 30.6 to 30.7  °C in May, and no month differs by more than 0.4  °C across the four cells checked. A 3 mm suit or a rash guard works all year.
