How to read this list, and what each kind of source is worth

This page carries 60 schools. 59 are in the register and 49 name a training body. Read 2026-09-24.

59 are in the Green Fins and SSI registers, which are third parties saying the business is listed and nothing more. Everything else is what the school states on its own site, quoted and dated. 24 of them were assessed in person, by Green Fins, which is the only assessment behind anything on this page. Nobody else was.

Two kinds of source in one place, read on 24 September 2026, and absence means something different in each. 28 of the 60 are Green Fins members, read from that register on 18 August 2026. Green Fins is the one source in this directory where somebody went and looked, and 24 of them were assessed in person and the other 4 self-evaluated. It is voluntary, so a business outside it is outside a scheme rather than below a standard. 43 are published by SSI in its own register of affiliated centres, read on 24 September 2026, 12 of them also Green Fins members. Each of those entries links to the register page it was read from, so the affiliation can be checked at the source rather than taken from here. 56 of the 60 publish a website. Absence still means nothing on this page. These are membership registers and a voluntary scheme, not licences: a business in none of them may simply not have joined, or may teach under a body that publishes no list at all. So this page is what these bodies list here and never the schools of Koh Tao. What a listing proves is narrow. It says the body registers this business, on the date given. It says nothing about the teaching, the equipment, the boats or whether the school is open this season, and nobody was assessed for the purpose of this page. Dive Wishes & More was published by SSI until September 2026 and is not any more; it stays on this page on its own website, which still names SSI, and that claim is not shown until it has been reviewed.

Green Fins means a named third party visited the business and scored it. 28 of the 60 here are Green Fins members, 24 of them assessed in person. Each of those records shows the membership level, the assessment and the register ID. Nothing else on this page is like that.

What absence means here. For the 59 taken from the registers, absence means the register does not carry the business, which is a statement about a list. For the other 1 it means the school is not in these registers, which says nothing about the school.

An equipment brand is not a training body. Several schools show Duotone, Cabrinha, Naish or North prominently. Those are gear sponsorships and certify nothing, so they are not recorded as affiliations, and a school that names only a brand shows a blank here.

A register entry can be opened; a claim cannot. Every affiliation taken from a register links to that body's own page for that business, so the listing can be read at the source instead of taken from here. Where a school's own words are shown instead, they are a claim with nothing behind them but the school, and they are labelled that way.

Why these registers and not others. A register earns its place here by being enumerable and citable: it has to list who is in it, and each entry has to have a page that names the business, so a reader can check the claim instead of taking it from us. Most do neither. Green Fins is the case that shows the difference, because its members are the best evidence in this directory and its member pages render the same bytes for a real centre and an invented one, so a Green Fins fact is stored with a centre id and never cited as a link. Twenty-five were tried and nine answer: what each one returned, with the date it was asked.

Sources for this Koh Tao list

  1. Each school's own website, opened between 2026-08-18 and 2026-09-22. Every quoted sentence was read on the page linked in that school's row, not in a search result and not on a booking portal. Among them instagram.com, aquatao.fr, assavadiveresort.com.
  2. How this list was assembled. The ssi training centre register, 3,868 centres worldwide fetched in one request and filtered to this place. A record is kept when the register's own city field names this place or its coordinates fall within 15 km of it, because each half fails alone: coordinates tied an Indonesian business to an Egyptian registration 10,000 km away, and city strings alone would have dropped a centre whose register coordinates sit 780 km out to sea. The Green Fins member register for the members, which was this page's only source until 24 September 2026, with the level and the assessment each member holds. A register entry and a Green Fins assessment are kept apart on every record, because one says a body lists the business and the other says somebody visited it. A business the register lists that was already on this page keeps everything read about it by hand; the register adds an affiliation and overwrites nothing. No aggregator, booking portal or review was used as a source.
