Prices and sailings are as each operator published them on 27 October 2026. Sea state is modeled significant wave height, 2023–2025, calculated for this page and explained below, with the coordinates of every cell.
Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui is a 30-minute crossing, so the choice is a base, not a region
The two islands are about 27 km apart, center to center, and the boats between them run like a commuter line. Lomprayah's 2026 timetable lists 16 departures a day from Samui to Koh Phangan, from the Pralarn, Bangrak and Nathon piers. The first leaves at 08:00 and the last at 17:30. Most crossings take 30 minutes, one speedboat takes 20, and the fare is 350 baht, or 250 on the ferry.
Back the other way the same timetable has 15 sailings, from a 07:30 speedboat to an 18:30 ferry that reaches Pralarn at 19:30. A second company covers the south-east corner. Haadrin Queen's booking system lists four daily boats each way between its pier in Ban Tai subdistrict, at Haad Rin, and its pier in Bo Phut on Samui: a ferry at 200 baht taking 50 minutes and a speedboat at 500 baht taking 25.
| Route | Boats a day | First | Last |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lomprayah, Samui to Koh Phangan | 16 | 08:00 | 17:30 |
| Lomprayah, Koh Phangan to Samui | 15 | 07:30 | 18:30 |
| Haadrin Queen, Bo Phut to Haad Rin | 4 | 10:30 | 18:30 |
| Haadrin Queen, Haad Rin to Bo Phut | 4 | 09:30 | 17:00 |
So an evening on the other island is the one thing the boats do not allow. Dinner on Samui means a bed on Samui. Everything else, from a dive day to a hospital visit to a flight, fits inside the timetable, and Koh Tao is an hour north of Phangan on most of Lomprayah's eight daily sailings.
The car ferries show which island is the bigger place. Raja Ferry's schedule, valid from 23 October 2026, runs 16 sailings a day each way between Donsak on the mainland and Samui's Lipa Noi pier, about 1 h 30. To Thong Sala on Koh Phangan it runs six, about 2 h 30.
Samui Airport is Koh Phangan's airport too, an hour away by boat and van
The airport is the core of the case for Koh Samui. A Phangan base flies through it as well, and Lomprayah sells the connection as one ticket: boat to a Samui pier, van to the terminal, 500 baht. The first leaves Koh Phangan at 07:30 and is at Samui Airport at 08:30. The last leaves at 18:00 and arrives at 19:00. Of the 13 through tickets in the timetable, most take an hour and the slowest two hours.
For a month with one flight in and one out, that hour barely matters. Frequent flyers feel it more. If you fly every couple of weeks or keep a client's calendar, the timing bites. An early flight from Samui is out of reach from Phangan, because the first boat on these timetables leaves at 07:30, so the night before is a night on Samui.
The same logic runs in reverse for anyone living on Samui and diving from Phangan. The boats are frequent enough that the island you sleep on decides very little, except at the two ends of the day.
A Sail Rock day costs 1,100 to 1,500 baht less from Koh Phangan than from Koh Samui
Sail Rock, the granite pinnacle that Thai marine orders call Hin Bai, stands in open water north-west of Koh Phangan. From the center of Phangan it is about 26 km in a straight line; from the center of Samui, about 50 km. The prices follow the distance.
On 27 October 2026, The Divers Boat listed a daily two-dive Sail Rock trip from Chaloklum on Phangan's north coast at 3,200 baht, leaving at 09:30, with 1 h 15 to the rock and back at 16:00. The Dive Inn asked 3,300, and Blue Horizon and Haad Yao Divers 3,400 each. On Samui, Member Diving showed 4,500, marked down from 5,940; Sons of the Sea 4,650; The Life Aquatic 4,700. Sons of the Sea gives the crossing as "around 50 to 90 minutes".
The Samui boats also sail on set days. Sons of the Sea goes to Sail Rock on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, Member Diving on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The Divers Boat runs its Phangan trip every day.
A Samui base can still buy the Phangan price. The Divers Boat's own page lays out the route: the 08:00 Lomprayah boat from Samui to Thong Sala, a transfer of about 30 minutes to Chaloklum, and the 17:00 boat home, which Lomprayah's timetable has arriving on Samui at 17:30. Two fares of 350 baht on top of 3,200 makes 3,900, still below all three Samui prices before the transfer is counted. The Koh Phangan diving guide covers the rock and Phangan's own shallow sites.
Ang Thong from Koh Phangan or Koh Samui: 4,200 against 4,800 baht
West of both islands lies Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, an archipelago of limestone islands. Each base has a shop that dives it. Haad Yao Divers on Phangan prices an Ang Thong day at 4,200 baht, and lets a non-diving companion snorkel along for 2,000. Sons of the Sea on Samui runs one every day from 4,800 baht and states that "the national park entry fee is included in your price".
That fee is set by the Department of National Parks, which sorts parks into four groups under a regulation in force since 7 June 2022. Mu Ko Ang Thong is in group 2, at 200 baht for a foreign adult and 100 for a child. Koh Phangan has a park of its own, Than Sadet-Ko Pha-ngan, in group 1 at 100 baht for a foreign adult. Ask the Phangan shop whether its price includes the Ang Thong fee.
For a couple where only one dives, this is the day that works for both, from either island.

Living on Koh Phangan for a month: the west coast lines up the desk, the boats and the pier
On Phangan, where you sleep decides how much of the island you can use. Haad Yao Divers picks up guests anywhere "excluding east coast + Haadrin", and Lomprayah's hotel transfers on the island exclude Thong Nai Pan. The shops quoted on this page work from the north and west coasts: France Plongée from the beach at Haad Salad, The Divers Boat from the pier at Chaloklum, and Haad Yao Divers with free pickups in its west-coast zone.
The desk is on the same side. ZenBeachHub, which describes itself as a few steps from Zen Beach in Sri Thanu on the west coast, lists a day pass at 350 baht, a week at 1,500 and a month at 6,500. The month pass includes 24-hour access, eight hours of phone booth and two hours of meeting room. Check the price before you count on it.
Samui offers something else: size. It has the airport, the private hospital described below, three ferry piers on the Lomprayah timetable and nearly three times Phangan's car ferry service from the mainland on Raja's. A month there is a month in a bigger town with longer distances, and every dive day starts with a pickup and a crossing.
Our Koh Tao guide for nomads covers the third island in the group, smaller than both.

The northeast monsoon hits the east coasts of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, not the channel between them
Late in the year the wind turns northeast over the Gulf. The Thai Meteorological Department's summary for November 2025 records the monsoon over the Gulf "almost the whole month", rather strong at its end, and a low-pressure cell over the lower Gulf from 19 to 21 November.
Which coast you live on matters more than which island. Monthly means of significant wave height, and the share of model hours with a meter of sea or more:
| Month | Off Phangan's north coast | Off Phangan's east coast | Channel between the islands | Off Samui's east coast | Off Samui's west coast |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 0.52 m, 7% | 0.62 m, 15% | 0.47 m, 3% | 0.64 m, 17% | 0.34 m, 1% |
| February | 0.42 m, 2% | 0.52 m, 7% | 0.41 m, 2% | 0.57 m, 10% | 0.30 m, 0% |
| April | 0.22 m, 0% | 0.25 m, 2% | 0.20 m, 0% | 0.26 m, 2% | 0.17 m, 0% |
| July | 0.38 m, 0% | 0.39 m, 0% | 0.31 m, 0% | 0.33 m, 0% | 0.29 m, 0% |
| October | 0.23 m, 0% | 0.25 m, 0% | 0.19 m, 0% | 0.21 m, 0% | 0.16 m, 0% |
| November | 0.54 m, 13% | 0.63 m, 21% | 0.47 m, 7% | 0.62 m, 21% | 0.33 m, 1% |
| December | 0.57 m, 8% | 0.67 m, 13% | 0.50 m, 5% | 0.67 m, 12% | 0.34 m, 1% |
Calculated for this page from Météo-France's MFWAM wave model, run for Copernicus Marine on a grid of 1/12° (about 9 km), January 2023 to December 2025. The cells are centered at 9.83° N 100.00° E north of Phangan, 9.75° N 100.08° E east of it, 9.58° N 100.00° E in the channel, 9.50° N 100.08° E east of Samui and 9.50° N 99.83° E west of it. Shares of hours are shares of the model's three-hourly steps.
The two east coasts behave almost alike: about one November hour in five carries a meter of sea or more, and from November to January the waves come from the east-northeast and east. Samui's west coast, in the lee, barely moves all year. Off Phangan's west coast, at 9.75° N 99.92° E, the model gives 8% in November, close to the channel. The sea north of Phangan, toward Sail Rock, is rougher than that and calmer than the east.
April and October are the two calmest months in every cell except off Samui's east coast, where October and May are. From June to September the model's waves come from the south-west and stay small. For a long stay, a November booking on Chaweng or Thong Nai Pan is a different month from one in Sri Thanu or Nathon.
Kitesurfing on Koh Phangan: an IKO school at Baan Tai and two wind seasons
Koh Phangan's list holds one business Samui's does not: a kite school. Accrokite Koh Phangan is published by IKO in its register of affiliated schools, and its entry there teaches on Baan Tai beach on the south coast. "The spot is flat and the water level is always between 70 and 150 cm," it says. Courses run from December to April and from July to September, and the register's next season starts on 15 December 2026.
Those two seasons match the wind. Daytime hours at 12 knots or more, and where the wind comes from:
| Month | Hours at 12 kn or more | Mean wind | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 39% | 10.5 kn | Northeast |
| January | 35% | 10.2 kn | East-northeast |
| February | 22% | 8.8 kn | East-southeast |
| March | 12% | 8.5 kn | East-southeast |
| April | 4% | 6.1 kn | East-southeast |
| July | 38% | 10.7 kn | West-southwest |
| August | 31% | 9.7 kn | West |
| September | 44% | 11.1 kn | West-southwest |
| October | 13% | 7.5 kn | Northwest |
Calculated for this page from the ERA5 reanalysis, hourly wind at 10 m between 10:00 and 18:00 local time, 2023 to 2025, for the cell at 9.75° N 100.00° E. ERA5's grid is a quarter of a degree, so this cell covers much of the island and smooths the beach-level wind.
The rules have a line for it too. The 2025 environmental notification covering the sea around Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao bans "water sports or water tourism activities of every kind", naming scooters, jet skis, hydrofoil boats, parasail boats and banana boats as examples, except in areas Surat Thani province designates for them. Kitesurfing is not named. Ask the school whether Baan Tai is such a zone. The kitesurfing guide for learners covers what a first course involves.
Koh Phangan and Koh Samui water stays within a quarter of a degree
For a diver, the water decides nothing here. NOAA's satellite sea surface temperature for 2021 to 2025 puts the sea north-east of Koh Phangan at 27.9 °C in January and 30.6 °C in May. The channel between the islands reads 27.9 and 30.7, and the sea south-east of Samui 28.0 and 30.8.
The largest gap between the three in any month is 0.24 °C, in September. These are monthly means of NOAA's Optimum Interpolation sea surface temperature, version 2.1, for the quarter-degree cells centered at 9.875° N 100.125° E, 9.625° N 100.125° E and 9.375° N 100.125° E. A 3 mm suit or a rash guard covers the year on either island.
Hospital and chamber: Koh Samui has the private hospital, Koh Phangan has the boat to it
Bangkok Hospital Samui's directory lists 30 centers and clinics, among them trauma and emergency, intensive care and a referral center. It names no hyperbaric or diving medicine unit. For a Phangan base, that hospital is a 30-minute crossing away by day.
By night it is not. The last boat on the Lomprayah and Haadrin Queen timetables leaves Phangan for Samui at 18:30. After that, getting a hurt diver across depends on what the dive shop's emergency plan and your insurer arrange. Ask any shop on either island which recompression chamber its plan names and how a diver gets there. Then check that your dive insurance pays for the boat as well as the treatment.
Thai visa rules for a month on Koh Phangan or Koh Samui
Both islands are in Surat Thani province, so the paperwork does not change with the base. Since 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries and territories get a visa exemption for tourism with a stay of up to 30 days, under Ministry of Interior announcements published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. Count the nights: a four-week booking fits, a full 31-day month does not.
The longer route is the Destination Thailand Visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives it five years of validity, multiple entries and 180 days per entry, extendable once by up to 180 days through the Immigration Bureau, for a fee of 10,000 baht. Its "workcation" category asks for an employment contract or a portfolio showing remote worker or freelancer status, and the checklist asks for a bank balance of at least 500,000 baht over three months. The DTV guide goes through the documents.
Dive centers and the kite school on the Koh Phangan and Koh Samui lists
| Koh Phangan | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Businesses listed | 8 | 3 |
| Dive centers in the SSI register | 7 | 3 |
| Kite schools in the IKO register (read 27 October 2026) | 1 | 0 |
| With a website in the register | 6 | 3 |
| Compiled | 5 September 2026 | 24 September 2026 |
Both lists come from the training bodies' own registers, so they show who SSI and IKO list on each island, not how many shops there are. Haad Yao Divers, quoted above, teaches PADI courses and is on neither list. SSI files three of the Phangan dive centers under Surat Thani, the province, so the register cannot tell you which pier a boat leaves from.
One Phangan entry has changed name: by October 2026 the SSI register published Echo Divers as Hidden Cove, under the same register number. Ask any shop for its Tourism Authority of Thailand licence number before you pay.
Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui in five lines
- Koh Phangan for diving: Sail Rock about 26 km off, two dives for 3,200 to 3,400 baht, a daily boat from Chaloklum.
- Koh Samui for flights and a hospital: the airport and Bangkok Hospital Samui are on the island.
- The boats link them all day: 16 Lomprayah sailings from Samui to Phangan, 20 to 30 minutes, 350 baht.
- November is rough on both east coasts: about one model hour in five at a meter of sea or more.
- Phangan has the kite school, at Baan Tai, with seasons from December to April and July to September.
Koh Phangan for the dive-and-desk month, Koh Samui for flights and a hospital close by
Pick Koh Phangan if you will dive or kite several times a month and work the rest. Stay on the west or north coast, near the desk and the boats, and use Samui for the airport. Do not pick it if you take early flights often or want a private hospital on your own island.
Pick Koh Samui if you fly in and out several times, if a partner does not dive, or if you want the bigger town. Stay on the west coast if you come in November, and take the 08:00 boat to Phangan on dive days. Do not pick it for a month of daily diving.
If neither suits, the third island is in Koh Samui vs Koh Tao and Koh Tao vs Koh Phangan, and the Koh Samui diving guide covers the trips from Samui site by site.
FAQ: Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui
Is Koh Phangan or Koh Samui better for diving?
Koh Phangan. Sail Rock is about 26 km from the center of Koh Phangan against about 50 km from Samui's, and four Phangan shops priced the two-dive day at 3,200 to 3,400 baht on 27 October 2026, against 4,500 to 4,700 on Samui. One Phangan boat goes every day; the two Samui shops that publish a schedule sail on set days.
How long is the ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan?
20 to 30 minutes on Lomprayah, which lists 16 departures a day from Samui to Koh Phangan, 08:00 to 17:30, at 350 baht, and 15 back, 07:30 to 18:30. Haadrin Queen runs four boats each way between Bo Phut and Haad Rin: 25 minutes by speedboat at 500 baht or 50 minutes by ferry at 200.
How do you get from Koh Phangan to Samui Airport?
By boat and van on one Lomprayah ticket, 500 baht. The first leaves Koh Phangan at 07:30 and reaches Samui Airport at 08:30; the last leaves at 18:00 and arrives at 19:00. Most of its 13 through tickets take an hour, so an early flight from Samui means a night on Samui.
Can you kitesurf on Koh Phangan?
Yes. Accrokite Koh Phangan, an IKO school, teaches on Baan Tai beach, where its register entry says the water is between 70 and 150 cm deep. Courses run December to April and July to September. In ERA5 wind data for 2023 to 2025, 39% of daytime hours in December and 44% in September reached 12 knots or more.
When is the sea roughest around Koh Phangan and Koh Samui?
November to January, on the east coasts. In wave-model data for 2023 to 2025, the sea off Phangan's east coast had a meter of sea or more in 21% of November hours and off Samui's east coast 21%, against 1% off Samui's west coast. October is one of the two calmest months in every cell checked.
Can you stay a month on Koh Phangan or Koh Samui without a visa?
Up to 30 days. Since 15 September 2026 nationals of 60 countries and territories get a visa exemption for tourism of up to 30 days, so a 31-day month does not fit. For longer, the Destination Thailand Visa allows 180 days per entry and asks for a balance of at least 500,000 baht over three months.
