Best whale-shark spots

Swimming alongside a whale shark, the biggest fish in the sea and a gentle plankton-feeder, is unforgettable, and a few spots see them reliably in season. These are the best whale-shark destinations we cover, each linked to its full guide. Always choose responsible, low-impact operators and never touch or ride them.
Each guide linked below carries the verified figures and where they came from.

How we chose

Whale sharks are seasonal aggregations, so the list is really a calendar, and we selected only places where the aggregation is documented and reasonably reliable rather than anecdotal. We excluded provisioned sites, where sharks are fed to hold them in place, because it changes their behaviour and migration. Nobody can guarantee a sighting inside a season.

FAQ

Where is the best place to swim with whale sharks?

Tofo in Mozambique is among the best, with whale sharks and mantas much of the year. Utila (Honduras) and the Similans (Khao Lak) have strong seasonal encounters, and the Maldives sees them across its atolls. Whale sharks are wild and migratory, so timing and a bit of luck matter; check the season in each guide.

Is it ethical to swim with whale sharks?

It can be, with the right operator. Avoid places that feed or corral them (a real concern at some sites), keep the required distance, never touch, ride or block them, and limit numbers in the water. Choose operators that follow a code of conduct and support research or conservation.
