What August gives you on the water
August has the most reliable conditions and the worst crowds on this site, and the list is chosen with the second in mind. August is the busiest and windiest month. Europe's thermal winds peak, Indonesia holds its dry season, and prices reflect both. Book early or go where the crowds are not. Every base here is included because its own guide names August as part of its working window, not because the weather is generally nice, and where a place is marginal we say so rather than padding the list to a round number.

August is the busiest month on the planet for tropical storms, in two basins at once
If one month deserves a caveat on a list like this, it is August, and the caveat has numbers on both sides of the Pacific.
The Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normal for the western North Pacific is 5.7 tropical storms or stronger in August, the highest of any month in a table that runs back to 1951. September is 5.0 and October 3.4; the whole year averages 25.1, so roughly one named system in four arrives in August alone. Siargao sits at the edge of that basin.
The Atlantic does its own version. The National Hurricane Center's 1991–2020 progress table puts the average season's first hurricane on 11 August, its fourth named system on 15 August and its sixth on 29 August, and describes most Atlantic activity as falling “between mid-August and mid-October”. For the Azores, out in the middle of it, August is when a distant storm becomes a swell forecast rather than a warning.
None of which makes August unusable: the Zambezi is at its best because it rained upstream months ago, and Nias works on groundswell. It makes August the month to read a forecast before a brochure.

Is August a good month for whitewater?
For the Zambezi, yes: low water from roughly August to December is the classic season, when levels drop and the most rapids open up. In Uganda, the White Nile's June to August window brings sunnier skies and more technical lines. Rishikesh is the exception, closed through the peak monsoon.
Where is the wind strongest in August?
Prea and the Ceara coast, where the peak runs August to November, and El Gouna, where August is the standout month of its core summer season. Pozo Izquierdo is also inside its June to September peak.
