Key takeaways
- The Nationalparkamt says kitesurfing is prohibited in the entire park, with one approved exception at Suhrendorf on Ummanz, which is not on the Darß
- Prerow's beach ordinance says steerable kites may not be operated in the bathing-beach area from 1 May to 30 September, with fines of 5 to 1,000 euros
- The main basin of the Saaler Bodden, the south of the Barther Bodden and Grabow, and the southeast of the Bodstedter Bodden lie outside the park on its legal map
- Long-term water means reach about 19.5°C in August and stay under 10°C through April, and the Prerow school opens only from 1 May to 3 October
- Thirteen VDWS stations carry this page's name, and only two of them are filed in Prerow
Prerow kitesurfing starts with a ban: the park's one kite area is on another island
Prerow's own beach page lists kitesurfing among the things to do here. The Nationalparkamt Vorpommern, which runs the park wrapped around the town, says something sharper: "kitesurfing is prohibited in the entire national park. The only exception is an approved kitesurfing area in Suhrendorf on the island of Ummanz." Ummanz lies off Rügen, not on this peninsula.
The stated reason is birds. Water birds read a kite as an "enemy in the air" from a great distance, says the park, and flush. Its brochure counts up to 65,000 resting cranes in autumn.
The federal navigation ordinance for this coast, the NPBefVMVK, bans sailboards in Zone I and within 200 meters of reed edges in Zone II. It never uses the word kite. It does let the federal waterways directorate ban further water sports devices where protection requires it. The flat ban comes through in the park authority's own wording, on its site and in its April 2021 brochure.
Wing foils appear in neither text. Windsurfers get a narrower deal: not in the red or green zones, except to cross green water from a designated spot. A WWF chart from 2019 marks such spots at the west end of Prerow and at Wieck.
Downwinders along this coast deserve one question. On the legal map, a route from Ahrenshoop to Prerow or on to Hiddensee runs through the park and past the closed Zone I water at Darßer Ort. Before you book or plan one, ask how the route is cleared with the park.
The Prerow enclave: open water off town, but no named kite zone
Here is what makes Prerow different. The 1990 park ordinance says built-up places inside its boundary, "including their nearest surroundings", do not belong to the park. On the ordinance's own 1:50,000 map, the park line leaves the shore west of Prerow, loops out over the water, and runs east past Zingst before it comes back.
So the water directly off town sits in a gap. Annex II of the federal ordinance points the same way. It lifts the motor ban for the water seaward of "the national park enclaves" at Prerow-Zingst. The WWF chart shows no zone color there, between the park line and the beach.
A gap is not a permit, though. No text names a Prerow kite zone. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's tourism site says a separate kite area is "in planning", on an undated page. The exact offshore edge cannot be read from a scanned map at that scale, and you cross it the moment you ride out far enough.
Federal sea traffic rules still bind you. Section 31 of the Seeschifffahrtsstraßen-Ordnung bans kite boards in fairways except on announced water, makes kiters give way to all vessels, and bars riding at night or in reduced visibility. Its permission for sailboards outside the fairway does not list kite boards at all. Ask the Nationalparkamt in Born (+49 38234 5020) before riding alone.
Prerow's beach ordinance grounds steerable kites from May to September
The town's rule is one sentence long. Section 9(6) of the Strand- und Badeordnung reads: "Lenkdrachen dürfen in der Zeit vom 01.05 bis zum 30.09. im Bereich des Badestrandes nicht betrieben werden." Steerable kites may not be operated in the bathing-beach area in those five months. The Ordnungsamt can grant exceptions for organized events.
Breaking it is a listed offense, with fines from 5 to 1,000 euros. The clause does not name kitesurfing, and it does not define the bathing beach. Read plainly, it catches a kite flying over bathers whichever sport is hanging from it. Lifeguards from DLRG cover the stretch from the Bernsteinweg access to crossing 24, from 1 June to 31 August.
Watch the crossing numbers. The ordinance dates from 2007 and calls Fuchsberg crossing 22. A current beach guide calls the same crossing 37, and the Prerow kite school gives its address as crossing 34 at Bernsteinweg.
The neighbors differ. Wustrow's 2021 ordinance has no kite clause in its water sports section, and the park ends north of Ahrenshoop, so the outer coast of Fischland is not park water. For Zingst, the state tourism site says kiting is allowed only in designated areas, naming crossing 6. The school there gives crossing 14 as its address, so confirm the launch.

Saaler Bodden kitesurfing: the big standing water lies outside the park
The Saaler Bodden is why this region has kite schools at all. Boddens are shallow lagoons cut off from the sea by spits. The regional tourism board calls this one among the largest standing-depth areas in Germany. The WWF chart shows shelves under 2 meters along much of its shore and about 3 to 4 meters in the middle.
The park's southern boundary is the point. The ordinance draws it from the harbor at Neuendorf, around the Neuendorf and Born islets, to just southwest of Born. West of that line the Bodden is outside the park, including the Saal, Dierhagen, Wustrow and Ahrenshoop shores. East of it, you are inside.
The water is also different from the Baltic. WWF gives the Saaler Bodden 0.2 percent salt against about 1.0 percent in the Baltic. Saal's school advertises no tide. Levels still move with the wind, and WWF warns against walking on wind flats left dry at low water.
The chain continues east, and the line gets fussier. A straight boundary from Leuschenort to Michaelsdorf cuts the Bodstedter Bodden, so its northwest half is park and its southeast half, on the Pruchten side, is not. In the Barther Bodden and Grabow the boundary follows the north side of the marked fairway. South of it is outside.
Outside the park does not mean empty of limits. WWF asks boats to stay off marked sensitive shallows from October to March, a recommendation and not a law. Its chart labels the Grabow shore near Dabitz "navigable only 1 April to 30 September". Keep 50 meters from reeds, which is also the park's figure.
Kitesurfing schools around Prerow: six launches, six different legal pictures
Pick the school by its water, not its postcode. Prices are the schools' own, read on 4 November 2026. Park status comes from the legal map.
| Base | Water | Park line | Published beginner price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prerow, Bernsteinweg (Kiteschule Darss) | Says standing-depth Bodden; meets on the beach side | Town is an enclave; ask which water | €195, 2 days of 4 h |
| Saal (Kitemafia) | Saaler Bodden, Am Bodden 2a | Outside | €440, 5 days, 16 h (list still dated 2025) |
| Dierhagen Dorf (Loop In) | Saaler Bodden, by boat, marked 80 ha area | Outside | €239, 2 days, 8 h |
| Born (Kitesurf & Kanu Born) | Saaler Bodden, by boat | Born sits on the line; ask where | €339, 3 days, 12 h |
| Pruchten (Kiteverein) | Bodden about 5 km from the Baltic | Southeast side, outside | €199, 2 days of 4 h |
| Dabitz harbor (Water Central) | Grabow shallows | Outside; seasonal WWF advice | €219, 2 days of 4 h |
Loop In's setup is the odd one out. It says its learning area sits about 500 meters from the Dierhagen harbor, reachable only by boat, with no bathers or private kiters, and that courses do not run on the Baltic itself. If you are brand new, that kind of water beats anything off Prerow's beach, and the kitesurfing learning guide covers what the first days involve.
Bring proof of level if you plan to rent. The Prerow school asks for a level 3 license, ID and a 50 euro deposit, and its kite and board day rate is €70. The Fehmarn kitesurfing guide covers the VDWS card in more detail, along with the kite island further west on this coast.
Prerow wind reads east on the Baltic and west on the Bodden, and August goes quiet
The Kite and Windsurfing Guide calls Prerow the region's first choice in an easterly, with a west wind "alright too, if gusty and a little lighter". The state tourism site rates it for winds from northwest through east.
The Bodden wants the opposite. The same state site describes Saal as relaxed in west winds that strengthen with sun over land. A separate spot guide for the Saaler Bodden at Born favors south to west-northwest and says long windless stretches in summer, August especially, are common.
The German weather service backs the seasonal shape. Its Barth station, about 15 km from Prerow on the lagoon side, averaged about 3 Beaufort from January to March and about 2.5 from August to October over 1991 to 2020, with gaps in the record. Treat that as a pattern and not as what you will ride in. Average monthly peak gusts fall from 23.6 m/s in January to 18.5 in July.
Prerow's beach is the Nordstrand, which faces north. A south wind blows straight off the land there, away from shore and toward cold, open water. The town's own beach safety page warns about offshore wind for swimmers. Waves are small inside the sandbanks, says the guide, and very occasionally pass 2 meters outside them.
Baltic water off the Darß stays under 10°C through April
The federal hydrographic agency, BSH, reports no water temperature for Prerow in its monthly tables. Two of its stations bracket the peninsula: Warnemünde to the west, read at 1.5 meters, and Barhöft at the eastern lagoon mouth, read at 0.5 meters. These are long-term means of 7 a.m. readings, over 2014 to 2020 and 2011 to 2020.
| °C | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warnemünde | 3.5 | 3.4 | 5.0 | 8.7 | 12.9 | 17.3 | 19.2 | 19.5 | 17.0 | 12.9 | 9.1 | 5.7 |
| Barhöft | 1.7 | 1.8 | 3.9 | 9.2 | 14.3 | 18.0 | 19.4 | 19.6 | 16.0 | 11.1 | 6.5 | 3.3 |
Read the two rows together. The shallow station warms faster in spring and cools faster in autumn, and a standing-depth lagoon should behave more like it than like the open coast. By October, Barhöft is already near 11°C.
The windiest months are therefore the coldest ones. A rider who comes for January and February wind meets water under 4°C, closed schools and few people watching. Pack accordingly with the travel wetsuit guide, and note that the Prerow school asks for neoprene shoes in spring and autumn.
The Prerow pier, the rescue cruiser and who answers when a kite goes down
Prerow gained a large obstacle in 2024. The pier runs about 720 meters into the Baltic to the Inselhafen, which replaced the emergency harbor at Darßer Ort. It is now home port of the DGzRS rescue cruiser, so help is close. Stay well clear anyway. The harbor rules of 30 September 2024 expressly ban surf, kite and wing boards from the harbor area.
For a rider in trouble, dial 112. At sea the rescue center is Bremen Rescue on VHF channel 16. From a German mobile near the coast, 124 124 reaches the same center, though DGzRS notes it is a service number and not an official emergency line. The regional hospital is Bodden-Kliniken at Sandhufe 2 in Ribnitz-Damgarten, whose emergency room says it runs around the clock.
Downwind of a south wind off Prerow there is nothing but Baltic, so tell someone on shore which crossing you left from.
Reaching Prerow takes a train, a bus and patience with the Meiningen bridge
Rostock-Laage is the local airport, and it is thin. Its site lists Antalya, Heraklion, Milan and Vienna, with Hurghada planned, so most people come overland. The Stralsund-Barth airfield is for private planes. By road you leave the A19 at Rostock-Ost and take the B105.
ICE and IC trains reach Ribnitz-Damgarten West without a change, says the tourism board, and regional trains serve Barth. VVR buses go on from both onto the peninsula. Trains to Prerow itself remain a plan. In December 2025 the state government said planning approval for the Zingst to Prerow section would begin in 2027 at the earliest, in a project it costs at about 204 million euros.
From the Barth side you cross the Meiningen bridge, a temporary lift bridge since 2012. In 2026 it opened for boats four times a day from 16 March to 1 November: 09:45, 11:55, 17:45 and 20:00, for up to half an hour each. Time your arrival around those slots. Coming from Ribnitz, you drive up the Fischland instead.
Working remotely from Prerow: a desk in Ahrenshoop and a season that stops on 3 October
The named coworking space is not in Prerow. Project Bay is at Dorfstraße 22 in Ahrenshoop, at the Fischland end of the peninsula, with reception on weekdays from 8:30 to 19:00. It advertises high-speed internet and sea views, and quotes prices on request. Holiday lets in the regional magazine list WLAN constantly and speed almost never, so ask for a measured figure.
The kite school opens from 1 May to 3 October, and Loop In's next kite season starts on 1 May 2027. The tourist tax is €2.50 per person per day all year, or €90 for a year, and it applies from your first day. People who work in the area are not counted as visitors under its rules, but the text does not address laptop work on a holiday, so ask your landlord.
In August 2025 Prerow passed a preservation ordinance whose stated aim is that housing should outweigh other uses, and changes of use now need its approval. Build in extra time to find a monthly let.
Prerow in August, or with a beginner kite, is the wrong call
One beach to walk onto and launch from all summer is what Prerow cannot give you. The ordinance works against it from May to September, and the beginner water is on the lagoons. Learners do better based in Saal, Dierhagen or Pruchten.
August is an unreliable bet as well. Rules matter more than usual, because a wrong turn here crosses a national park line you cannot see from the water. Riders chasing warm flat water have other options on the flat-water kitesurfing list. Prerow suits an experienced rider who wants east-wind waves, a wide beach outside high season, and lagoons within reach.
The 13 VDWS stations filed under Prerow, and the two actually in town
The Fischland-Darß operator list holds 13 businesses, all from the VDWS register, read on 1 September 2026. The name is a convenience. The register files only 2 in Prerow, the rest under Dierhagen (3), Saal (2), Kenz-Küstrow (2), Born, Pruchten, Wustrow and Zingst (1 each).
Ten of the 13 list kitesurfing. The other three are a sailing school, the windsurf center at Wustrow and Prerow's Wassersportschule on the Ahoi Camp, which lists sailing, SUP, windsurfing and wing foiling. A listing shows the body registers the business on that date, and nothing about the teaching. Which registers can be read sets out what each source covers.
FAQ: Prerow kitesurfing
Is kitesurfing allowed in Prerow?
Partly, and the rules overlap. The national park bans kites across its area, but built-up Prerow and its nearest surroundings sit outside the park. The town's beach ordinance then bars steerable kites from the bathing-beach area from 1 May to 30 September. No text names a Prerow kite zone, so ask the Nationalparkamt before riding alone.
Where can you kitesurf near Prerow?
Mostly on the lagoons outside the park. The schools use the Saaler Bodden at Saal, Dierhagen and Born, the Bodstedter Bodden side at Pruchten, and the Grabow at Dabitz. The regional tourism board names Saal, Neuendorf and Pruchten as launches. The park's only approved kite area, Suhrendorf, is on Ummanz, off Rügen and away from the Darß peninsula.
Is kitesurfing banned in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft national park?
Yes. The park authority says kitesurfing is prohibited in the entire national park, because water birds treat kites as enemies in the air from a great distance. The only exception it names is an approved kitesurfing area at Suhrendorf on Ummanz. Windsurfing has its own designated spots, and riders may only cross the green zone from them.
How cold is the water for kitesurfing at Prerow?
Cold for most of the year. BSH long-term means at the two stations either side of the peninsula sit between 1.7 and 3.5°C in January, near 9°C in April and about 19.5°C in August. Neither station is at Prerow. The shallow lagoon station warms faster in spring and cools faster in autumn.
Can you learn to kitesurf at Prerow?
Yes. Kiteschule Darss runs courses from Bernsteinweg in Prerow, with a two-day beginner course at €195 and a maximum of four students. It says it teaches in standing-depth Bodden water, so ask where before booking. Other schools sit directly on the Saaler Bodden at Saal and Dierhagen, on water outside the national park.
Note: Conditions, safety guidance and regulations change. Verify current information with official sources, including the school, the park authority and the local municipality, before you travel or ride.
