Model wind is ECMWF's 9 km IFS model, 2019–2024, 10:00 to 17:59 local time; water is NOAA's satellite sea surface temperature, 2021–2025. Rules, sailings and visa terms are as read at the issuing body in October 2026.
Naxos vs Paros wind: one meltemi over three stretches of water
Naxos and Paros sit about 20 km apart, and the summer north wind that both sell, the meltemi, reaches them as one system. A weather model cannot see a beach, but it can show whether that wind arrives stronger on one side of the strait than the other. The answer is a surprise to anyone reading the brochures.

Calculated for this page from ECMWF's IFS model (about 9 km grid, hourly) through Open-Meteo, 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2024, wind at 10 m between 10:00 and 17:59 Greek time. The cells are the model's nearest sea cells: 37.08° N 25.32° E, 7.4 km north-west of Mikri Vigla; 37.01° N 25.05° E, 5.2 km south-west of Pounda; and 37.01° N 25.29° E, mid-strait, 3.6 km off New Golden Beach. The 12 and 15 knot lines are this page's thresholds for a big kite or foil and for an ordinary twin-tip day.
Over open water the two islands barely differ. Off Mikri Vigla and off Pounda the model gives the same 64% of July daytime hours at 12 knots or more, and Pounda's cell runs a few points ahead at 15 knots from June to October. The cell between the islands is the windiest of the three, at 58% in July. Mikri Vigla looks into that strait from the east and Golden Beach from the west.
July is the month. June is weaker than September in every cell, and May is the calmest month of the year in the model. Years differ too: in July and August 2023 the Pounda cell reached 15 knots in 20% of daytime hours, against 46% in 2022 and 2024. Book a month, not a week.
The model also shows the meltemi's daily rhythm. In July the Mikri Vigla cell averages 9.6 knots at midnight and 13.8 at noon, so the morning is for work and the afternoon for the water.
The schools quote more than any of this. Flisvos Kitecentre on Mikri Vigla puts its own windy days at "over 80%", crediting a Venturi effect through the Naxos and Paros channel, and the strait is indeed the model's windiest cell. Paros Windsurf Center at New Golden Beach claims "320+ Windy Days a Year". Both are the schools' own figures, counted in days, which hourly model data cannot check one to one.

Pounda, Golden Beach and Mikri Vigla: where each beach faces
Paros gives a rider two coasts. Pounda is on the west side, looking across the narrow channel to Antiparos. ParosKite, the school on the beach, describes "a lengthy, shallow-watered shoreline with a sandy bottom" and a "constant and steady side shore wind", and opens from April to October. Golden Beach and New Golden Beach face east into the strait toward Naxos, where Paros Windsurf Center gives its season as April to October.
Pounda has two neighbours that the rules care about. The north end of the Paros runway is about 1.5 km away, and Pounda is also the Paros end of the short car ferry to Antiparos. Kite areas must keep clear of airport approach lines and of port entrances, so ask a Pounda school where its marked corridor runs.
Naxos puts its kite beach and its learning water in different places. Mikri Vigla, 8.7 km south of the port in a straight line, is a sandy bay. Flisvos Kitecentre says riders who drift downwind "will end up downwind on the sandy beach and can walk back easily", with a rescue boat on hand.
The Laguna is Naxos's learning water, on the edge of town. Flisvos Sportclub, about 1.2 km south of the port, calls it "a shallow, flat-water area", with side-onshore wind from the right, a rescue boat and supervision from 10:00 to 19:00, open from 22 May. A first-week windsurfer can walk there from town.
Greek kitesurf and windsurf rules at Mikri Vigla and Pounda
Greece writes its water-sports rules nationally, so they are identical on both islands. Kiting has its own ministerial decision, 2133.3/62620/2020, published in October 2020. Windsurfing sits in General Port Regulation No. 20, in the current text the Hellenic Coast Guard publishes, a file dated 6 October 2026. That text also replaces the kite decision's wind limit.
The wind limit is the rule riders get wrong. Kitesurfing is now banned "when the wind is above seven (7) Beaufort or above sixty-one (61) km/h", and windsurfing is banned above seven Beaufort or 61 km/h too. The 2020 decision had set the kite limit at six Beaufort.
The kite decision lists who and where:
- Age: no kiting under 16, or by anyone who cannot swim. Riders of 14 and 15 need written parental consent and a school escort within 100 m, at most two minors per escort.
- Swimmers: at least 200 m from where bathers usually swim to, where no buoys mark it, and 100 m outside the yellow swim buoys.
- Obstacles: 200 m from anchored ships, dive buoys, rocks, reefs and moving boats.
- Ports: no kiting inside ports, marinas and fishing shelters or within one nautical mile of their entrances, which a local committee can cut to 500 m.
- Range and hours: not beyond one nautical mile from the coast, not before sunrise or after sunset, and not on beaches declared crowded.
- Gear: helmet, harness with hook, line knife, life jacket, a quick release and a second safety release, and a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May.
A school that rents kites must mark a launch corridor at least 100 m wide and 100 m long with red buoys, put up two signs reading "NOTE-KITESURF TAKEOFF AREA", and keep a digital anemometer on the beach. The kite goes up only when nobody stands within 100 m. Windsurfers keep the same 200 m and 100 m distances from swimmers, wear a life vest, and under-16s ride with an escort within 50 m.

Sea temperature off Naxos and Paros: the wetsuit rule decides, not the island
The water is the same within a few tenths of a degree. NOAA's satellite record, averaged by month for the quarter-degree cell over Mikri Vigla and the one over Pounda and Parikia:
| Month | Naxos cell | Paros cell |
|---|---|---|
| March | 16.6 °C | 16.5 °C |
| May | 18.8 °C | 18.9 °C |
| June | 21.5 °C | 21.8 °C |
| July | 23.6 °C | 23.9 °C |
| August | 24.8 °C | 25.1 °C |
| September | 24.2 °C | 24.3 °C |
| October | 21.8 °C | 21.9 °C |
| November | 19.7 °C | 19.7 °C |
Monthly means of NOAA's OISST v2.1, 2021–2025, for the cells centred at 37.125° N 25.375° E and 37.125° N 25.125° E, read from NOAA PSL's monthly file.
March is the coldest month, at about 16.5 °C, and August the warmest, near 25 °C. The practical line is legal rather than thermal: from 15 October to 15 May a kiter in Greece must wear a wetsuit, whatever the sea reads. A quarter-degree cell is about 25 km across, so it shows the season, not a cold morning after three days of meltemi.
Diving off Naxos and Paros: two Beaufighters and the Article 2 bans
Both islands carry the same rules underwater. Article 2 of Law 4688/2020 makes recreational diving "freely permitted" across Greece, then lists the exceptions: underwater archaeological sites the culture ministry designates, military areas and lighthouse zones, and areas a marine spatial plan closes. Scuba is also banned in shipping lanes and anchorages, on routes of rented motorised craft and 100 m either side of their starting points, where marine protected area rules forbid it, over submarine cables, and wherever the port authority decides.
The wreck rules give the two islands a matching pair. A 2022 joint ministerial decision lists 91 wrecks declared monuments, and its South Aegean section names a Bristol Beaufighter off Paros (entry 31) and another off Naxos (entry 33). Under Article 7 of the same law, wrecks sunk more than 50 years ago may be dived only on dives guided or organised by a recreational dive provider.
Two conditions follow from the 2022 decision. The dive must be notified at least a day ahead to the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities and the port authority. And diving on each listed wreck opens only once the Ephorate has documented it and posted its decision. Ask the dive centre to show you that decision for the aircraft you want to see.
On SSI's register at least, the dive side leans to Paros. Of the four SSI dive centres on our Naxos list, three are filed by SSI under Paros.
Ferries and flights between Piraeus, Paros and Naxos
In Blue Star's schedule notice for the strike of 30 October 2026, both ships bound for Naxos call at Paros first. The Blue Star Naxos leaves Piraeus at 23:30, reaches Paros at 04:00 and Naxos at 05:20. On the way back it leaves Naxos at 12:45, reaches Paros at 13:35 and Piraeus at 18:40. The same notice lists Blue Star 1's sailing from Piraeus at 07:25 to Paros, Naxos, Santorini and Ios.
On those sailings Paros was 4 hours 30 to 4 hours 40 from Piraeus and Naxos 5 hours 50 to 5 hours 55. The hop between the islands took 50 minutes each way. Living on one island and riding on the other works for a day trip, not as a daily commute.
The Paros state airport was set up under a 2016 decision as a unit of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, with a runway of 1,400 by 30 m. Sky Express sells flights from Athens to both islands and from Thessaloniki to Paros. Naxos airport is 2.8 km from the port; Paros airport is 7.8 km from Parikia, a short ride from Pounda.
Staying a month or longer on Naxos or Paros: Schengen and the Z.1 visa
Paperwork is a tie, because both islands are in Greece. For non-EU visitors the European Commission's rule is a stay "of up to 90 days in any 180-day period", counted across all 29 Schengen countries. A month of kiting fits inside it.
For longer, Greece's digital nomad visa sits in Article 68 of the Migration Code, Law 5038/2023. A Greek consulate issues a national visa of up to 12 months to remote workers whose employers or clients are outside Greece. The income test is €3,500 a month, net of tax where it is salary, plus 20% for a spouse and 15% per child, and the visa fee is €75. Before it expires you can apply for a two-year residence permit. You may not work for a Greek employer. The Paros guide covers daily life on the island.
Kite, windsurf and dive schools on the Naxos list, and why Paros has none
Our Naxos operator list holds 13 businesses, each taken from the SSI, IKO or VDWS register. Paros has no list of its own on this site. The two islands are close enough that the registers mix them:
| Naxos list | |
|---|---|
| Businesses listed | 13 |
| In the IKO register (kite) | 5, all filed under Naxos or Mikri Vigla |
| In the VDWS register (windsurf, wing, kite) | 4, one filed under Paros and one under Athens |
| In the SSI register (diving) | 4, three of them filed under Paros |
| Filed by their register under Paros | 4 |
| Publishing a website in the register entry | 5 |
| Green Fins members | 0 |
The list was compiled on 21 September 2026. A register entry says the body lists the business on that date, nothing about the teaching or whether it opens this season. The Pounda and New Golden Beach schools quoted above are not on it, so for Paros, ask each school which body it is affiliated with and check the number.
Naxos vs Paros in five lines
- Same meltemi: over open water the model gives both islands 64% of July daytime hours at 12 knots or more.
- Paros reads a little windier: at 15 knots the model has 42% of July daytime hours off Pounda and 58% in the strait, 36% off Mikri Vigla.
- Naxos teaches better on foot: a shallow windsurf lagoon 1.2 km from the port, and a kite bay that drifts riders onto sand.
- Kiting stops above force 7 (61 km/h) on both, and a wetsuit is compulsory from 15 October to 15 May.
- The ferry hop is 50 minutes; Paros is about 4.5 hours from Piraeus, Naxos about 5 hours 50.
Paros for wind on two coasts, Naxos for learning beside a town
Pick Paros if you already ride and want the most wind in the model. Pounda and Golden Beach face opposite ways, about 12 km apart, and the ferry from Piraeus is shorter. The Paros guide covers the island. Do not pick it for a June trip on the strength of its July numbers.
Pick Naxos if you are learning, travel with someone who is, or want to walk to the water. The Naxos windsurfing and kitesurfing guide covers Mikri Vigla and the Laguna, and the kitesurfing lessons guide covers the first week. Do not pick it for raw wind: its sea cell reads the lowest of the three on this page.
If the meltemi suits you but the Cyclades do not, Rhodes and Prasonisi and Kos sit under the same wind further east. Whichever island you pick, check that your travel health insurance names kitesurfing.
FAQ: Naxos vs Paros
Is Naxos or Paros better for kitesurfing?
Paros for experienced riders. In model data for 2019 to 2024, the sea cell off Pounda has 15 knots or more in 42% of July daytime hours, against 36% off Mikri Vigla, and Golden Beach adds a second coast. Naxos suits learners: the kite school on Mikri Vigla says drifting riders land on its sandy beach, and at 12 knots the model gives both islands the same July share.
When is the meltemi strongest on Naxos and Paros?
In July. In model data for 2019 to 2024, 64% of July daytime hours off both Mikri Vigla and Pounda reached 12 knots or more. June is weaker, with 15 to 18% of hours at 15 knots or more, and May is the calmest month. July and August 2023 were a weak summer, so book a month rather than a week.
Can you kitesurf in Greece when the meltemi blows force 7?
Up to it, not above it. The Coast Guard's current text of General Port Regulation No. 20 bans kitesurfing and windsurfing above seven Beaufort or 61 km/h; the 2020 kite decision had set six. Kiters must be 16, or 14 with parental consent and an escort, and keep 200 m from swimmers in unbuoyed water.
How long is the ferry from Paros to Naxos?
About 50 minutes on Blue Star's conventional ships, which call at Paros before Naxos. Blue Star's notice for 30 October 2026 shows Piraeus to Paros in 4 hours 30 and Piraeus to Naxos in 5 hours 50 on a night sailing.
Is the water warmer on Naxos or Paros?
No meaningful difference. NOAA satellite data for 2021 to 2025 put both seas at about 16.5 °C in March and near 25 °C in August, within about 0.3 degrees of each other every month. From 15 October to 15 May Greek rules require kiters to wear a wetsuit anyway.
Do I need a visa to stay a month on Naxos or Paros?
Not if your passport allows Schengen short stays: up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across 29 countries. For longer, Greece's digital nomad visa under Article 68 of Law 5038/2023 asks for €3,500 a month, net of tax for salaried income, and is issued by a Greek consulate for up to 12 months.
