Black Mountain Wake Park is a full-size cable wakeboarding park about 10km west of Hua Hin town, next to the well-known Black Mountain golf resort, and it is one of Thailand's better-regarded beach-town cables. You come here to ride a roughly 880 to 900 meter cable loop that pulls you along at around 30km/h, with mellow kickers and obstacles you can grow into, plus staff and a rescue boat watching the water. It is genuinely beginner-friendly and works well as a half-day or day trip while you are staying in Hua Hin. One caveat: this is a visit-for-the-activity spot, not a nomad base, so treat it as an add-on to a Hua Hin trip rather than a reason to book a month-long stay.

Key takeaways

What Black Mountain Wake Park actually is

It is a cable wake park, not a boat operation. Instead of a boat towing you, an overhead cable running on a loop of roughly 880 to 900 meters drags you across the water at about 30km/h, so there is no fuel cost, no wake, and you can lap the lake again and again for a fixed session fee.

The park sits beside the Black Mountain golf resort in the Hin Lek Fai hills, a short drive inland from the beach. It shares a site with the separate Black Mountain Water Park, so do not confuse the two: the wake park is the cable lake for wakeboarding, the water park is slides and a wave pool. You want the wake park.

The cable can pull several riders at once, and the layout mixes clear water for learning with kickers and obstacles for people who want to progress, which is why it reads as beginner-friendly but not boring once you improve.

Difficulty and who it suits

Cable wakeboarding is one of the easier ways into the sport because the pull is smooth and predictable, and you are never far from the edge. Complete beginners routinely get up on the board in their first session with an instructor, and the park is set up for exactly that.

The grade steps up when you start hitting the kickers, sliders and ramps. Those features are optional, so an intermediate can session the flats while a stronger rider works jumps and rail tricks on the same lap.

Expect a learning curve in your body more than in danger: sore forearms from gripping the handle, tired legs, and the odd hard faceplant. That is normal cable wakeboarding, and it eases within a couple of sessions.

When to go to Black Mountain, and the seasons

Hua Hin has its own weather station, and the monthly normals it reports set the calendar for a day on an open cable. December and January are the dry months: 11.4 mm and 9.9 mm of rain, spread over 1.4 and 1.3 rain days, with daily highs of 29.2 °C and 29.8 °C. That is the coolest air of the year here and the smallest chance of losing an afternoon.

The wettest month is October, not September. October brings 236.0 mm across 16.6 rain days, close to double September's 120.7 mm, and it is the only month above 150. From May to October the station counts twelve to seventeen rain days every month. Rain by itself does not close a cable. The storms that carry it do, because lifeguards clear the water for lightning.

March to May is the hot stretch, with highs of 32.4 to 33.6 °C and overnight lows that never drop below 24. That is comfortable in the water and heavy on the deck between sets.

A cable needs no swell and no dam release, so the season here is really a question of weather and daylight. A dry-season morning is the booking that holds.

How to do it: rentals, lessons and getting there

You can arrive with nothing. The park rents boards and provides the buoyancy vest and helmet, and there are instructors and first-aiders on site, so a first-timer can book a lesson and a short session and be riding the same day. Sessions are sold in blocks (commonly a two-hour minimum) up through day, week and month passes for people who want to keep coming back during a longer Hua Hin stay.

Getting there is a 15 to 20 minute drive west of central Hua Hin, around 10km inland. The simplest options are a taxi, a Grab, or a hired car; local shuttle and songthaew services also run out toward the Black Mountain area, but times are limited, so plan your return.

As of 2026, ballpark cable prices sit around a few hundred baht for a couple of hours up to roughly 1,200 baht for a full day, with board rental on top and multi-day passes available. Treat those as indicative only and confirm the current rate and opening hours directly, as they change and vary by season.

Safety note: read this before you ride

Always wear the vest and helmet the park issues, and take the beginner briefing even if you have boarded before, because cable technique differs from behind a boat. Keep clear of the cable line and the carrier when you fall, let go of the handle rather than fighting a bad pull, and wait for the all-clear before swimming to the start dock.

The water is warm and shallow in places, so a hard fall onto a flat back or a locked knee is the realistic injury, not cold or current. Warm up, start on the flats before touching any kicker, and stop while you are still fresh, as most wipeouts happen on the last tired laps.

Respect weather calls without argument. If lifeguards clear the water for a storm, that is a lightning risk, not caution for its own sake. Add strong sun to the list: you are exposed for hours, so use reef-safe sunblock, cover up and hydrate.

A cable park is its own discipline, and the obstacles are the reason

It is tempting to read a cable park as wakeboarding with the boat taken away. The sport's own competitive structure disagrees. At The World Games, where the non-Olympic disciplines are contested, Cable Wakeboard is a separate event from Wakeboard Freestyle.

The difference is described mechanically rather than as a matter of status. Wakeboarding is a sport in which the rider is “towed behind a boat using a rope, or by a cable skimming the surface”; in “Wakeboard Freestyle a boat is used to tow the athlete”, whereas in “Cable Wakeboard riders are pulled by a specially set-up cable, encountering structures on the course”. Those structures: the kickers and rails a full-size park is built around: are the discipline, not an accessory to it.

The scoring is shared across disciplines and worth knowing before a first session on obstacles: riders “score points in three categories: Execution, Intensity and Composition”. Composition is the one nobody expects: how the run is assembled, not just what lands.

For a beginner that reframes the day. A first cable session is not a cheaper wakeboard lesson; it is the start of a different discipline, and the sensible order is to learn the cable first and the features afterwards.

FAQ: Black Mountain Wake Park, Hua Hin

Is Black Mountain Wake Park good for complete beginners?

Yes. Cable wakeboarding is one of the gentlest ways into the sport, the pull is smooth, and the park has instructors, lifeguards and rental gear. Most first-timers get up on the board during their first session with a bit of coaching.

Do I need my own gear?

No. You can rent a board and are provided with a buoyancy vest and helmet, so you only really need swimwear, a towel, sunblock and water. Bring your own bindings only if you are particular about fit.

When is the best time to visit?

The cool dry season, roughly November to February, is the most comfortable. March to May is very hot, and June to October is the rainy season with common afternoon storms, so ride in the morning and check the forecast.

How much does it cost and how do I confirm prices?

As of 2026, expect roughly a few hundred baht for a two-hour block up to around 1,200 baht for a full day, plus board rental, with week and month passes available. Prices shift, so confirm the current rate and hours with the park directly before you go.

How do I get there from Hua Hin, and is it a base or a day trip?

It is about 10km and a 15 to 20 minute drive west of central Hua Hin, easiest by taxi, Grab or hired car. Treat it as a day trip or activity add-on while staying in Hua Hin, not a place to base yourself.
