What May gives you on the water
May is where low-season pricing still overlaps with usable conditions, which is the only reason this list exists in the shape it does. May is early-season value. Several places are already good and still priced for low season, though May is also when monsoon timing starts to matter and forecasts get less trustworthy. Every base here is included because its own guide names May as part of its working window, not because the weather is generally nice, and where a place is marginal we say so rather than padding the list to a round number.

One season opens, and one kind of day gets absurdly long
May is the month a hurricane season starts. The National Hurricane Center's dates are fixed and worth knowing in the right order: the eastern Pacific season runs from 15 May to 30 November, and the Atlantic season does not open until 1 June. So for the first fortnight of May the entire Atlantic and Caribbean is formally out of season while the Pacific side of Central America is already in it. On the 1991–2020 record the eastern Pacific's first named storm arrives on 10 June on average and its first hurricane on 26 June, so mid-May is an opening date rather than a warning.
At the other end of this list, Alaska is doing something a tropical traveller has no instinct for. At Anchorage's latitude the Naval Observatory has 16 h 14 min of daylight on 1 May, rising to 18 h 29 min by the 28th, sunrise 04:43, sunset 23:12. Two hours of daylight gained inside one month. It is why a May packrafting trip can carry a schedule that would be reckless in September: if you are late off the water, you are still off it in the light.
FAQ: Watersports Destinations in May
Where should I go in May if I want warm water and wind?
Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka and Le Morne in Mauritius both start their main seasons in May, and both pair a shallow lagoon with reliable wind. Zanzibar's Kusi season starts around June, so May is the shoulder there.
Is May good for whitewater?
It is the start of the northern snowmelt season: the Ottawa River, Voss and Sjoa all run roughly May to September, with the biggest, coldest flows in late spring and early summer. Bovec on the Soca runs from around March or April with peak snowmelt late April to June.
