What June gives you on the water
June splits cleanly: the southern hemisphere opens as the Caribbean closes, so this page is really two lists in one. June is the start of the southern-hemisphere winter swell. Indonesia and the Pacific begin their best months, while the Caribbean enters hurricane season and Europe warms up. Every base here is included because its own guide names June as part of its working window, not because the weather is generally nice, and where a place is marginal we say so rather than padding the list to a round number.

The Atlantic season opens, and it opens slowly
1 June is the date everyone knows: “The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30”, and the basin includes the Caribbean, which is where Cabarete sits. What gets left out is how little happens in the first month. On the National Hurricane Center's 1991–2020 progress table, the average Atlantic season has its first named storm on 20 June, its first hurricane on 11 August and its first major hurricane on 1 September. A whole average season contains 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes; in June it contains none of them yet.
So June in the Caribbean is an open season with an empty ledger, which is a different thing from a risky month, and it is why the June shoulder is often the best-value fortnight of the year there. Watch the outlooks, keep the booking flexible, and do not confuse the calendar with the weather.
In Europe the June argument is light. At Torbole on Lake Garda the Naval Observatory has the sun up at 05:27 and down at 21:09 on 15 June, 15 hours 42 minutes. The Ora fills in after midday, which means a full thermal session and still three hours of usable evening afterwards. It is the one month where a lake can outlast you.

What is the meltemi, and does it ruin a trip?
It is the strong summer north wind over the Aegean, roughly June to September. For kiting and windsurfing on Paros it is the whole point. For sailing out of Athens it is the opposite: the guide rates the shoulder months, May to June and September to early October, over the July and August meltemi peak.
Where is the surf biggest in June?
The southern hemisphere. Jeffreys Bay peaks June and July, Sumbawa and Nias hit their most consistent size, and Florianopolis gets its biggest south swells in June and July.
