Tioman, if your dates are February or early November, or if the 2024 bleaching worries you: its reefs lost far less live coral. Perhentian, if you want a chamber in the same state, opened in Kuala Nerus in March 2026, and a cargo wreck at about 18 meters plus a pinnacle that starts at 5. Both charge the same RM30 park fee and both stop for the northeast monsoon.

The table sets out Perhentian vs Tioman with fees, rules, seasons and facilities as of October 2026, each from the body or business named in the sources. Water figures are NOAA Coral Reef Watch monthly means for the Terengganu and the Johor and Pahang reef regions, so they describe each coast rather than one dive site.

Perhentian vs Tioman: one park fee, one rulebook

Start with what does not split them. Both island groups are federal marine parks run by Malaysia's Department of Fisheries, and the department gives a marine park as the sea out to two nautical miles from the lowest tide line. It lists the Perhentian archipelago among the four marine park groups of Terengganu, and Tioman as the largest of nine islands, Tulai, Labas, Sepoi, Seri Buat, Tokong Bahara, Gut, Cebeh and Sembilang among them, that form the Pulau Tioman Marine Park.

The fee is the same national order. As of October 2026 the department publishes a conservation charge of RM30 for a foreign adult, RM15 for children aged 6 to 12 and for over-60s, and nothing for disabled visitors, under the Fees (Marine Parks Malaysia) Order 2017. MyKad holders pay RM5 and RM2. On Tioman, B&J Diving Centre says the charge is paid in cash at the Mersing or Tanjung Gemok jetty.

The rules come from the Fisheries Act 1985. Section 43 makes it an offence, without the Director General's written permission, to fish, to take or possess any aquatic animal or plant "whether dead or alive", to collect coral, or to anchor "by dropping any kind of weight on, or by attaching any kind of rope or chain to, any coral, rock or other submerged object". Section 44 bans carrying a speargun or any spearfishing equipment inside a park. Even aiming one into it from outside is prohibited.

One rule is new. From 1 January 2026 every marine park visitor must carry their rubbish back to the mainland, and the campaign started at the Perhentian and Redang park centers, not at Tioman.

The 2024 bleaching hit Perhentian much harder than Tioman

This is the line where the two islands really differ. On 23 June 2024 the Department of Fisheries confirmed mass coral bleaching in Malaysia. Its surveys from April to June found more than half the coral affected at marine park islands including Perhentian and Tioman, most of it in water shallower than 10 meters. That is snorkeling depth.

The recovery report it published on 9 November 2024 is where they part. Between July and August and September and October 2024, average live coral cover around Perhentian fell from 49.2% to 30%, while dead coral rose from 3.3% to 10%. Around Tioman, live cover went from 43.3% to 40%. The Director General of Fisheries said the Terengganu marine park islands recorded a high loss of live coral compared with the other parks. A notice of 2 July 2024 halting reef restoration, coral transplanting and any physical contact with coral was still in force at that date.

NOAA's satellite record says the same thing. In 2024 its Terengganu reef region peaked at 13.6 degree heating weeks on 21 June, Bleaching Alert Level 3, "Risk of Multi-Species Mortality". The Johor and Pahang region, which includes Tioman, peaked at 9.2 on 16 June, Alert Level 2. This year both regions touched Alert Level 1 in late May and June. On 12 October 2026 both stood at Bleaching Watch, with no accumulated heat stress.

For a snorkeler weighing Perhentian vs Tioman, that is the reef to plan around: Perhentian's shallows took the bigger hit. Expect dead coral alongside live coral on both.

When Perhentian and Tioman shut for the northeast monsoon

Both islands face the South China Sea, and the Malaysian Meteorological Department names the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia among the areas that get "heavy rain spells" in the northeast monsoon. November, December and January bring the most rain on this coast. The last monsoon began on 13 November 2025 and was due to end with a transition phase from 29 March 2026. As of 14 October 2026 the department had not yet given a start date for the 2026/27 season.

Terengganu does not order its islands closed. The state's tourism committee chairman said in October 2025 that the state "has not issued any official directive to close the islands", that several large resorts on Perhentian and Redang stay open, and that boats can cross three or four times a month. When the waves are rough, boats are not allowed to sail. Closure, in practice, is the dive centers and the boats deciding not to run.

In Perhentian vs Tioman, this is where Tioman has the longer year. B&J Diving Centre on Tioman gives its season as 1 February to early November and says the island "is pretty much shut down over monsoon (Nov-Jan)". Flora Bay Divers on Perhentian Besar gives the beginning of March to the end of October. On the Tioman side, Berjaya's resort says the Tanjung Gemok ferry terminal closes from November to February, so check which jetty is running in the edge weeks. At a Budget 2027 consultation on the island in September 2026, a Kampung Juara community representative said local businesses can only operate fully six to seven months a year.

Perhentian's pinnacle and wrecks, Tioman's offshore islands

Below The Surface Divers on Perhentian Kecil lists the sites most boats there run. Tokong Laut, the Temple of the Sea, is a submerged pinnacle from 5 to about 24 meters. The Sugar Wreck, the MV Union Star 17, is a 90-meter cargo ship lying on its side at about 18 meters. Terumbu Tiga runs from 10 to 25 meters through boulders and swim-throughs. The Vietnamese Wreck, an upside-down US landing craft at about 24 meters with often strong current, is the one it reserves for advanced divers.

Tioman's best diving sits on the small islands around it. Blue Heaven Divers, based at Air Batang, gives Tiger Reef a maximum of 25 meters and warns that its current makes it no site for beginners. Chebeh goes to 30 meters with "potentially strong current during the high tide". The deep option is the Sawadee or Sipadan wreck, the former navy ship KM Sipadan, sunk by the marine park in 2012 and dived from 26 to 32 meters.

The difference is depth. Perhentian's pinnacle and both wrecks lie within about 24 meters, and the Sugar Wreck at 18. Tioman's wreck is a deep dive, and its signature reefs come with current.

Snorkeling off Perhentian and Tioman: the shallow reefs

On Tioman the snorkel site operators name first is Renggis, a few rocks and trees above the surface. Blue Heaven lists it at 12 to 15 meters at most and calls it "a very good snorkeling site", home to blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill and green turtles and cuttlefish.

Perhentian's shallow sites are the training reefs. Below The Surface describes Batu Nisan as a shallow reef near its center where turtles are seen, and D' Lagoon as a sheltered bay on the north of the small island with hard corals. Both are exactly the depth band the 2024 bleaching hit hardest. A turtle does not care about coral cover. A snorkeler hoping for a bright garden might.

Perhentian and Tioman water temperatures, month by month

On temperature the two are close to identical. NOAA Coral Reef Watch's long-run monthly mean sea surface temperatures for the two reef regions:

MonthTerengganu (Perhentian)Johor and Pahang (Tioman)
February27.5°C27.5°C
March28.4°C28.3°C
May29.8°C29.6°C
July29.1°C28.9°C
September28.8°C28.6°C
November28.5°C28.9°C

No month differs by more than 0.4°C, and May is the warmest on both coasts. The thermometer settles nothing in Perhentian vs Tioman. A 3 mm suit or a rash guard covers either season.

Getting to Perhentian from Kuala Besut and to Tioman from Mersing

For Perhentian, everything goes through the Kuala Besut jetty on the Terengganu coast, between the airports at Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu. Flora Bay Divers puts the islands some 20 km off Kuala Besut, with the nearest town, Jerteh, 12 km from the jetty. On the islands you move by sea taxi.

On access, Perhentian vs Tioman comes down to where you start. Tioman is the easier island from Singapore. Berjaya's resort on the island gives about 3.5 hours by road from Singapore to Mersing jetty, about 2 hours from Senai airport in Johor Bahru, 5 hours from Kuala Lumpur, then about 2 hours by ferry to Tekek. Bluewater Express is one of the ferry operators. Capacity is the complaint: in September 2026 Tioman operators told Bernama that limited ferry services make the island hard to reach, and one resort said it had cancelled bookings for lack of seats.

Tioman also has a short airstrip at Tekek. SKS Airways opened a Subang to Tioman route in May 2022 with 19-seat Twin Otters. In May 2026 the island's state assemblyman said he had been told the runway extension from 850 meters to 1.3 km was cancelled, so check the airline before you plan on flying in.

The nearest recompression chamber to Perhentian and to Tioman

On medical cover, Perhentian vs Tioman changed this year, in Perhentian's favor. Hospital Sultan Zainal Abidin, the teaching hospital of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin in Kuala Nerus, opened a hyperbaric medicine unit on 15 March 2026. Its multiplace chamber takes up to seven patients, and the hospital lists diving-related conditions and air or gas embolism among the conditions it treats. Kuala Nerus is down the coast from Kuala Besut, on the Kuala Terengganu side.

Tioman's side is thinner. B&J Diving Centre says plainly: "There is no decompression chamber available on Tioman Island and the closest is in Singapore (some 6 hours transportation)." Singapore General Hospital's Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine Centre runs a 24-hour line for diving emergencies, +65 6222 3322, as listed in October 2026. That route crosses a border, so keep your passport with you on the island.

The Royal Malaysian Navy installed recompression chambers at its Kuantan base in 1982, according to the Medical Journal of Malaysia. Ask your Tioman shop which chamber its emergency plan calls, and make sure your dive insurance pays for evacuation as well as treatment.

A season on Perhentian or Tioman with Malaysia's DE Rantau pass

Both islands are in the same country, so the visa question does not split them. For a remote worker, Malaysia's digital-nomad route is the DE Rantau Nomad Pass, run by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation. Its FAQ of 28 August 2026 sets a minimum annual income of USD24,000 for tech professions and USD60,000 for non-tech ones. The pass runs 3 to 12 months, renewable for another 12, to a maximum of 24 months, and is open to all nationalities except Israeli citizens.

The catch is the calendar. A twelve-month pass covers eight or nine months of diving on either island, then a monsoon. Plan the rest elsewhere in Malaysia, or time a shorter pass to the season.

In Perhentian vs Tioman by the numbers, Perhentian has the smaller list and more Green Fins members: two Gold and two Silver, against two Gold on Tioman, all assessed in person within the twelve months before the register was read. That scheme covers environmental practice, not safety. Several SSI entries are filed under a mainland address, Kuala Besut for three Perhentian shops and Mersing for one Tioman shop.

Perhentian vs Tioman in five lines

Perhentian for the Sugar Wreck and a nearby chamber, Tioman for a longer season and healthier coral

Pick Perhentian if you are newly certified and want a wreck at 18 meters and a pinnacle that starts at 5, if a hospital chamber in the same state matters to you, and if your dates fall between March and October. Expect bleached shallows. The Perhentian diving guide covers the island in depth, and the islands also feature among the places to swim with turtles.

Pick Tioman if your dates are February or the first days of November, if you are coming from Singapore, or if the state of the coral matters more than a short ride to a chamber. Plan for current at Tiger Reef and Chebeh. The Tioman diving guide has its season and fee in detail. If your dates fall in the monsoon on both, Semporna and Sipadan in Sabah are the Malaysian diving across the water.

FAQ: Perhentian vs Tioman

Is Perhentian or Tioman better for diving?

It depends on your level and dates. Perhentian keeps its best-known sites, the Tokong Laut pinnacle and the Sugar Wreck, within about 24 meters. Tioman's highlights, Tiger Reef and Chebeh, come with current, and its wreck lies at 26 to 32 meters. Tioman's reefs also lost far less live coral in the 2024 bleaching.

Which is better for snorkeling, Perhentian or Tioman?

Tioman's coral came through 2024 better: the Department of Fisheries measured live cover falling from 43.3% to 40% there, against 49.2% to 30% at Perhentian. Renggis, off Tioman, is a well-known snorkel site with blacktip reef sharks and turtles. Most of the bleaching on both was shallower than 10 meters.

When are Perhentian and Tioman closed for the monsoon?

Roughly November to February. Dive centers on Perhentian publish a season from the beginning of March to the end of October; one Tioman center gives 1 February to early November. Terengganu does not order its islands closed, but boats only cross on calm days. The 2025/26 northeast monsoon ran from 13 November 2025 to late March 2026.

How much is the marine park fee for Perhentian and Tioman?

The same on both: RM30 for a foreign adult, RM15 for children aged 6 to 12 and over-60s, free for disabled visitors, and RM5 or RM2 for MyKad holders. The Department of Fisheries sets it under the Fees (Marine Parks Malaysia) Order 2017. On Tioman it is paid in cash at the mainland jetty.

Is there a hyperbaric chamber near Perhentian or Tioman?

For Perhentian, Hospital Sultan Zainal Abidin in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, opened a seven-patient hyperbaric unit on 15 March 2026 that treats diving-related conditions. Tioman has no chamber on the island; one dive center names Singapore, some six hours away, where Singapore General Hospital runs a 24-hour diving emergency line.

Is the water warmer in Perhentian or Tioman?

Neither, in practice. NOAA's long-run monthly means differ by no more than 0.4°C, from 27.5°C in February on both coasts to 29.8°C off Terengganu and 29.6°C off Johor and Pahang in May. A rash guard or a 3 mm suit does for either island.
