How to read this list, and what a register entry does not tell you

This page carries 60 schools. 60 are confirmed against the register. Read 2026-09-14.

Every one of them is here because the SSI register lists it, and each entry links to the record it was read from. Nobody assessed any of them. Being in a register is not an inspection. Nothing on this page was read on the schools' own sites, so it carries no quotes and no languages.

Two sources in one place, read on 14 September 2026, and absence means something different in each. 59 of the 60 businesses here hold a diving-operations licence from the Malta Tourism Authority, which licenses recreational diving under Chapter 409 of the Travel and Tourism Services Act and S.L. 409.13; the register is public and each entry carries its reference. 19 appear in the SSI register of affiliated centres, and those entries link to the register page they were read from. A business missing from the licence register is not necessarily unlicensed, and one missing from SSI may teach under a body that publishes no list at all. One more thing the licence itself says: the Authority issues it for “diving operations”, and some holders are beach concessions and watersports centres rather than dedicated dive schools. What a licence proves is that the business was licensed on the day the register was read. It says nothing about the diving, the boat or the equipment.

On a dive page, Green Fins means a named third party visited the business and scored it. Nothing on this page is like that. What is here instead is a register entry: a body publishing the business in its own list, which settles that it is listed and nothing else about it.

What absence means here. A business missing from this page is one the SSI register lists nowhere in this place. That is a statement about a list and not about a school: it may never have joined, or may teach under a body that publishes no list at all.

A register entry can be opened; a claim cannot. Every affiliation taken from a register links to that body's own page for that business, so the listing can be read at the source instead of taken from here.

Why these registers and not others. A register earns its place here by being enumerable and citable: it has to list who is in it, and each entry has to have a page that names the business, so a reader can check the claim instead of taking it from us. Most do neither. Green Fins is the case that shows the difference, because its members are the best evidence in this directory and its member pages render the same bytes for a real centre and an invented one, so a Green Fins fact is stored with a centre id and never cited as a link. Twenty-five were tried and nine answer: what each one returned, with the date it was asked.

  1. No operator website was read for this page. Everything here comes from the registers below, so there are no quotes, no training body beyond the register's own and no languages.
  2. How this list was assembled. The MTA register of licensed establishments, filter “Diving”, 78 entries read in one pass on 2026-09-14, plus the SSI training centre register. An MTA entry is placed by the locality the register files it under; Marsalforn, Munxar, Qala, San Lawrenz, Xewkija and Xlendi are Gozo, the rest Malta. Where a licence entry and an SSI entry are the same business, they are one record: joined on an identical folded name, or by hand where both registers name the same locality and the same core name, each of those decisions written down with its reason in content-ops/MTA_JOINS.txt.
