How to read this list, and what a register entry does not tell you

This page carries 20 schools. 20 are confirmed against the register. Read 2026-09-23.

Every one of them is here because the SSI register lists it, and each entry links to the record it was read from. Nobody assessed any of them. Being in a register is not an inspection. Nothing on this page was read on the schools' own sites, so it carries no quotes and no languages.

Every dive centre in the Azores that SSI publishes in its own register of affiliated centres, read on 23 September 2026: 20 of them, on seven of the nine islands. Sao Miguel carries 7, Terceira and Faial 4 each, Pico 2, and Sao Jorge, Graciosa and Santa Maria one each; Flores and Corvo carry none in any register this directory reads. Each entry links to the register page it was read from, so the affiliation can be checked at the source rather than taken from here. 19 publish a website in the register. Absence means nothing on this page, and here that sentence carries more weight than usual. The other Portuguese pages in this directory rest on the RNAAT, the state register a business must be in to trade, where absence is a fact about the business. That register is mainland Portugal only: it holds no Azorean establishment at all, and the licence numbers Azorean operators print carry the regional suffix RAA and belong to a different series, one that collides with the mainland numbers. So this page carries no licence column, and what is left is a membership register: a centre that is not in it may simply not have joined, or may teach under PADI, CMAS or NAUI, none of which publishes a list that can be read entry by entry. What a listing proves is narrow. It says the body registers this business, on the date given. It says nothing about the teaching, the equipment, the boats or whether the centre is open this season, and none of these businesses was assessed by anybody for this page. Nothing here was read on the operators' own sites yet, so this page carries no training body beyond the register's own, no languages and no quotes.

On a dive page, Green Fins means a named third party visited the business and scored it. Nothing on this page is like that. What is here instead is a register entry: a body publishing the business in its own list, which settles that it is listed and nothing else about it.

What absence means here. A business missing from this page is one the SSI register lists nowhere in this place. That is a statement about a list and not about a school: it may never have joined, or may teach under a body that publishes no list at all.

A register entry can be opened; a claim cannot. Every affiliation taken from a register links to that body's own page for that business, so the listing can be read at the source instead of taken from here.

Why these registers and not others. A register earns its place here by being enumerable and citable: it has to list who is in it, and each entry has to have a page that names the business, so a reader can check the claim instead of taking it from us. Most do neither. Green Fins is the case that shows the difference, because its members are the best evidence in this directory and its member pages render the same bytes for a real centre and an invented one, so a Green Fins fact is stored with a centre id and never cited as a link. Twenty-five were tried and nine answer: what each one returned, with the date it was asked.

  1. No operator website was read for this page. Everything here comes from the registers below, so there are no quotes, no training body beyond the register's own and no languages.
  2. How this list was assembled. The ssi training centre register, 3,864 centres worldwide fetched in one request and filtered to this place. A record is kept when the register's own city field names this place or its coordinates fall within 200 km of it, because each half fails alone: coordinates tied an Indonesian business to an Egyptian registration 10,000 km away, and city strings alone would have dropped a centre whose register coordinates sit 780 km out to sea. Green Fins is not among the sources here: its member pages render nothing a reader or a checker could confirm, and a citation has to point at the fact it cites. No operator website has been read for this page.
