Key takeaways
- The 2024 to 2029 Ministry of Culture program lists eight zones in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, none on Krk
- Article 9 caps diving on air at 40 meters, which clears the Peltastis and cuts off much of the Lina, the Jakljan and the Vis
- Any dive outside a registered organizer needs a €318.53 yearly authorization and is banned in protected zones
- Rijeka's hospital chamber says its team is available 24 hours a day; in an accident call 194, then the Sušak emergency center
- Only five of the 12 businesses on our Krk list are on Krk
Krk diving means wrecks, and winter storms put most of them there
Come here for steel on the seabed. The Kvarner's best-known dives are ships that met weather, and the centers on Krk sell them by name. Reef and wall diving exists too, with Dive Center Krk describing a wall at Selzine dropping to about 40 meters and Buborek naming Plavnik and Cres as its finest sites. The wrecks still set the price list.
The Peltastis is the one to start with. This Greek freighter sank in January 1968 between Šilo and Klimno on the east side of Krk, in a storm that one local account says killed its captain and seven crew. Accounts disagree on the date and on the depth. Their shallowest figures run from 6 to 15 meters and their deepest from 30 to 33, so the whole ship sits inside the recreational limit.
Treat it as a grave as well as a dive. Neptune Diving Centre in Šilo has laid a wreath for the crew since 2005. Hang-Loose-Diving lists a Peltastis dive at €49 and Dive Loft Krk at €69, the second with tank, air and weights, both as of 4 November 2026.
The Peltastis, the Sigrid and the Jakljan went down in storm or bura, the Lina in a snowstorm. Depths below span the accounts named in the sources.
| Wreck | Where | Depth reported | In the 2024–2029 program? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peltastis | Krk, Šilo to Klimno | 6–33 m | No |
| Lina | Cres, off Porozina | 20–55 m | No |
| Sigrid | Rijeka breakwater | 16–35 m | No |
| Elhawi Star | Off Sušak port | 26–42 m | No |
| Jakljan | Senj to Rijeka route | 37–55 m | No |
| Vis | Off Plomin bay | 40–60 m | No |
| TA 45 Spica | Off Novi Vinodolski | Past 40 m | Yes, zone 13 |
| “Tihany” | Off Unije | Not established | Yes, zone 12 |
The 40-meter air limit splits the Krk and Kvarner wrecks in two
The rule is one sentence. Article 9 of the Pravilnik o obavljanju podvodnih aktivnosti, the rulebook on underwater activities in Narodne novine 47/1999, says the greatest permitted depth of sport and recreational diving on air is 40 meters. Article 14 fines a diver who goes deeper 1,000 to 4,000 kuna, about €133 to €531 at the fixed conversion rate.
That word “air” matters. The article names air and gives no figure for other breathing gases, and none of the later amendments adds one. Article 3 does count mixed-gas equipment as diving gear. So the rulebook does not plainly forbid a trimix dive past 40 meters, and it does not plainly license one either. Ask the center how it reads this before you pay for a technical day.
The Lina shows the split on a single hull. She ran aground on Cres in a snowstorm in January 1914 and now lies down a slope. Three operators and a newspaper give her between 20 and 55 meters, and diving RABAC says just under half of her sits in sport range. A day there costs €105 with Hang-Loose and €110 with Dive Loft Krk or Pelagos.
The Jakljan starts at 37 meters by Dive Center Krk's figures, which leaves very little margin on air. The Vis off Plomin starts at about 40, and diving RABAC calls it no regular sport site and plans it for technical divers only.
No ministry wreck zone sits on Krk, but eight surround it in Kvarner
Croatia protects some underwater sites as cultural goods, and the Ministry of Culture's rulebook in Narodne novine 49/2019 sets the terms. Its Article 2 says that inside a protected zone only organized diving with a permit is allowed, and individual diving is prohibited. Every five years a program names the zones, and businesses bid for a limited number of permits. The fee is theirs to pay, not yours.
The 2024 to 2029 program has eight entries for Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, with 37 permits in all and a minimum of €300 a year each. Krk is not among them, which is the surprise for anyone arriving with the Vis rules from the Split diving guide in mind.
| Zone (program number) | What it protects | Permits | Special condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cres (7) | Ancient wrecks, Pernat and Martinšćica | 4 | None added |
| Osor (8), Susak (9), Ilovik (11) | Ancient sites and wrecks | 2, 6, 3 | None added |
| Mali Lošinj (10) | Ancient wreck, amphora site | 4 | None added |
| Unije (12) | Ancient wreck, steamer “Tihany” | 6 | No entry to parts without direct natural light |
| TA 45 (13) | Warship off Novi Vinodolski | 6 | No touching ammunition or weapons |
| Rab, Cape Sorinj (14) | Ancient wreck | 6 | Holders must clean the protective net |
Article 11 adds conditions for every zone: no entering or working inside protective nets, no tying up to a wreck, and the dive leader must be present. At most two registered groups may dive a wreck at once. Under Article 9 of the same rulebook, the holder sends the dive list to the ministry's inspectors and conservation department before leading a group in. The program caps a group at 15 divers per leader.
Before you book a zone dive, ask to see the permit, which Article 1b of the diving rulebook requires in the organizer's logbook. Absence from this list does not prove a wreck is unprotected, because Article 10(f) also closes any site protected as a cultural good.
The TA 45 Spica is the zone wreck nearest Krk. Torpedoes split this German torpedo boat at the very end of the Second World War, says a 2016 Novi list report, which describes a 50-meter stern section with guns still visible and treats the site as a technical dive past 40 meters.
The Tihany off Unije may not be the Tihany at all
Here the law and the history part ways. The program lists the “steamer Tihany” off Unije as cultural good Z-50, and at least one dive listing repeats that a cargo ship of that name ran aground near Školjic in 1912. A Hungarian ship register tells it differently. It has the Tihany stranding near Mamula at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor on 12 February 1917, then sinking under tow.
The evidence for Montenegro is physical. The register cites the builder's plate and a recovered bell reading TIHANY 1908, and PADI and an Italian diving association place the ship at Mamula, at about 40 meters. Whatever lies off Unije, its legal position stays the same, because the zone is defined by coordinates and a register number.
So book it under the name, and hold the name loosely. A local site says centers from Mali Lošinj and Cres bring divers to Unije, so start your inquiry there. The rule that binds you is the program's ban on entering parts of the wreck without direct natural light.

Diving from Krk without a center costs €318.53, even with a buddy
The rulebook divides all diving in two. Organized diving runs through a dive center, association or other registered person, under the constant supervision of a dive leader, entered in a logbook, with the organizer holding a concession approval. Article 1a then defines the rest in one line: individual diving is any diving that is not organized. Two certified friends with rented tanks at a Krk beach are individual divers.
Individual diving needs an authorization from a harbor master's office. Croatia's government portal names the offices as Pula, Rijeka, Senj, Zadar, Šibenik, Split, Ploče and Dubrovnik, or a branch, and advises booking ahead before the season. The price is €318.53, valid for one year from issue. Article 5a issues it “to a person”, so read it as one per diver.
Skipping it carries the same 2,000 to 5,000 kuna fine as diving a prohibited place, about €265 to €664. You must also mark your site with an orange or red buoy at least 30 centimeters across, or a diver-down or A flag, with a strobe visible at 300 meters by night. Unless you plan months of shore dives, a center's day rate is the cheaper route.
One more trap: the compulsory diving card is gone, repealed by a government decision in Narodne novine 96/2010. The rulebook's definitions cover scuba gear, so breath-hold diving sits outside them.
Krk's ports, the Rijeka wrecks and the other Kvarner water the law closes
Article 10 closes certain water to everyone unless the named authority grants an exception. No diving is allowed in ports, port approaches, port anchorages and areas of dense traffic. The same ban covers strict and special marine reserves, nature parks, the national parks of Brijuni, Kornati, Krka and Mljet, and water within 100 meters of anchored warships or guarded military sites. That Krka is the national park, not this island.
Rijeka is where this bites. The Sigrid rammed the breakwater in a bura in 1977 and still lies beside it, while Novi list places the Elhawi Star in front of the Sušak port. Exceptions to the port ban come from the local harbor master's office. Boats do run these trips, at €105 to €110 a day, so ask which approval covers the dive.
Finds are the other duty. If you spot possible archaeology outside a registered site, the portal says you do not lift it, you report its position to the conservation department, and it belongs to the state. A tourist diver's chance dive in 1996 led to the bronze Apoxyomenos, dated to the second or first century BC and now in its own museum in Mali Lošinj.
Rijeka's hospital chamber is the Krk diver's emergency plan
Know this address before you dive. The Center for Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Clinical Hospital Center of Rijeka sits on the Sušak site at Tome Strižića 3. It says its medical team is available around the clock, seven days a week, and its multiplace chamber seats eight patients and offers intensive care to two lying down. A hospital physician told Novi list in 2024 that Rijeka treats 15 to 20 divers a year.
The hospital's accident protocol is short. Give 100% oxygen, give oral fluids up to one liter an hour, and lay the diver down. Call 194 for emergency medical help, then tell the Sušak emergency center about the diving accident on 051/407-416. The chamber's own line is +385 51 407-435.
At sea, call 195, the free number of the national rescue center in Rijeka, or use VHF channel 16 or 112, which connects you to the same center. Every organizer must also keep oxygen first aid, a radio or phone, the displayed chamber and rescue numbers and a transport plan at the site, under Article 1c. Ask to see the plan, and check your dive insurance covers the evacuation leg.
Bura and cold water set the Krk diving season, not the calendar
This is cold-water diving for half the year. Croatia's weather service read 16.8°C at Malinska on Krk, 17.0 at Rab, 17.3 at Opatija and 18.4 at Mali Lošinj on 4 November 2026. For the full year there is no Krk station series to quote, so these Rijeka figures are triangulated from a climate site, a sea-temperature site and a school study: about 10.5 to 11°C in February, 11 to 11.7 in March, and about 25°C in August.
Pelagos in Njivice rents 7 mm suits, and that is the number to pack around in spring and autumn. Our travel wetsuit guide helps with the warmer months. Once the sea drops toward 11°C, ask the center about a drysuit.
Bura is the other calendar. It is the wind in the Sigrid and Jakljan stories, and it still shuts the road. Three independent accounts report the Krk Bridge restricted or closed in strong bura: Wikipedia says it often stops certain vehicle groups and sometimes all traffic, and on 1 April 2026 a caravan under a trailer ban ended up hanging over the railing, with the bridge closed for about 90 minutes.
Centers keep different hours. Dive Loft Krk in Vrbnik advertises daily opening all year. diving CRES published 28 March to 12 April and 25 April to 2 November 2026. diving RABAC runs from a week before Easter to early November and went into winter break on 31 October, with groups by arrangement.
Rijeka Airport sits on Krk, and it is built around summer
Rijeka Airport is on the island itself, at Omišalj. Its 2026 summer timetable ran from 29 March to 24 October, and Ryanair's rows in it run only from June to September. Croatia Airlines kept Rijeka to Munich through winter 2025/26. Check the 2026/27 winter schedule directly with the airline before you plan around it.
The state ferry lines stitch the region together. Valbiska to Merag links Krk to Cres in 25 minutes every day, Porozina to Brestova links Cres to Istria in 20, and Lopar to Valbiska links Rab to Krk in 80.
As a remote-work base, test this place before committing. The off-season case rests on one bridge, few flights and a handful of open centers. Ask any landlord for a speed test. No figure on Krk rent or coworking is solid enough to print.
Krk's famous wrecks are not for new divers
New divers hoping to tick off the famous wrecks will be disappointed. The Lina's lower half, the Jakljan, the Vis and the TA 45 are for trained deep or technical divers. Warm water year round is not on offer either. Solo shore divers should do the sums on that yearly fee first. Anyone wanting one town with walkable dive shops should look at the map, because the businesses are scattered across two islands and both shores of the gulf.
Krk suits a certified diver who wants history underwater and will plan around wind. If wrecks are the whole point, compare it against our wreck diving list first. It is a strong regional trip, and it is not a tropical one.
Twelve Kvarner dive businesses on our Krk list, and five of them on Krk
The Kvarner operator list holds 12 businesses, all published by SSI in its register of affiliated centers and read on 1 September 2026. The register's town field spreads them well beyond the island.
| Where it really is | Businesses |
|---|---|
| Krk island (5) | Buborek DC, Linardići; Dive Loft Krk, Vrbnik; Diver Krk, Krk town; Hang-Loose-Diving, Punat; Pelagos, Njivice |
| Cres island (2) | Diving Cres; Sea Mates, ACI Marina Cres |
| Rabac and Labin, east Istria (3) | diving RABAC; Dpa Rabac; Scuba Center Sv. Marina |
| Kostrena, mainland (1) | Diving Center Kostrena (registered as Budicinova j.d.o.o.) |
| Mošćenička Draga (1) | Marine Sport Dive Center |
Addresses matter here. Sea Mates advertises sidemount and SSI XR diving, and Diving Center Kostrena has a house reef with a plateau to 12 meters and a wall to about 40. An entry records a training affiliation, not a concession approval or a zone permit. Neptune in Šilo appears in the press and not in this register. Sites for Dpa Rabac, Diver Krk and Marine Sport did not load on 4 November 2026, so phone first. Which registers can be read explains each source's limits.
FAQ: scuba diving at Krk
Do you need a permit for Krk diving?
Not a personal one if you dive with a registered center, which works under its own concession approval. Any dive outside that setup counts as individual diving and needs an individual diving authorization from a harbor master's office. It costs €318.53 and lasts one year from issue. The old compulsory diving card was repealed in 2010.
How deep can you dive at Krk and in Croatia?
Article 9 of the Croatian rulebook sets the maximum for sport and recreational diving on air at 40 meters, and Article 14 fines anyone who goes deeper. The article names air only and sets no figure for other gas mixes. Your certification and the center's own plan still apply, so ask how a deep wreck dive is run before you book it.
Where is the nearest decompression chamber to Krk?
At the Clinical Hospital Center of Rijeka, on its Sušak site at Tome Strižića 3. Its Center for Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine says its team is available 24 hours a day and its chamber takes 8 seated and 2 lying patients. The protocol is oxygen, fluids, lying flat, a call to 194, then the Sušak emergency center on 051/407-416.
Can you dive Krk in winter?
You can, but pick the center first. Dive Loft Krk in Vrbnik advertises daily opening all year, while diving CRES publishes dates ending 2 November and diving RABAC closes from 31 October except by arrangement. Three sets of figures put Rijeka's February sea at about 10.5 to 11°C, so plan for serious thermal protection and days lost to bura.
Note: Conditions, safety guidance and regulations change. Verify current information with official sources, including the dive operator, the harbor master's office and the relevant government department, before you travel or dive.
