Candidasa Diving: Three Islets, Hard Currents and Who Should Base Elsewhere

Candidasa diving means three offshore rocks, not the town's own reef: Gili Tepekong, Mimpang and Biaha, 10 to 15 minutes by boat from the beach. Expect sharks, cold water in sunfish season and currents that catch out advanced divers. Newer divers and macro photographers do better at Padang Bai, across Amuk Bay.

Key takeaways

Candidasa diving starts offshore because the reef in front of town was dug up

Stand on the beach and the dive sites are in plain view, out on the horizon. Candidasa grew up as a resort behind a well-developed coral reef, and that reef was then mined for construction material. Japanese coastal engineers who surveyed the coast between 1999 and 2002 found the eastern reef dug out almost to its edge, the one part too wave-beaten to work.

The sand followed. With the reef gone, more wave energy reached the beach, because this coast lies open to the Indian Ocean on its east side. The public works ministry built 20 T-shaped groins, and the same 2003 paper says erosion stayed severe.

Repairs continue. A Japanese-funded project planned about 341,960 cubic meters of sand for this coast, along with new groins and the relocation of reef flat. In February 2026 Indonesia's state radio reported that the second phase takes in Candidasa, with sand filling and repairs to seawalls and groins, and is expected to run until 2028. Look at recent photos before booking a room for its beach.

So the boat is not optional. diving.DE takes guests out by jukung, the traditional outrigger, from the sand in front of its base. Gangga Divers puts the three islets 10 to 15 minutes from the Candidasa shore, which is the real attraction of Candidasa diving: serious water, a short ride from your hotel.

Gili Tepekong, Mimpang and Biaha are Candidasa's real dive sites, and they punish beginners

All three sit in or at the edge of Amuk Bay, which Gangga Divers measures at about 6 km across, with Padang Bai at the other end. The operators who sell Candidasa diving describe the same pattern: fish in numbers because water moves hard past the rocks. White-tip reef sharks are the steady draw, with schools of sweetlips and jacks, and sunfish in season.

Candidasa dive siteBoat rideThe diveCurrent, as operators put it
Gili Tepekong (The Canyon)20 min from Padang Bai; islet about 1.5 km southeast of CandidasaWall to a rim at about 27 m, shelter behind it at 30 m, then two pinnaclesMild to very strong; down currents can end the dive
Gili Mimpang10 min from Candidasa; 25 min from Padang BaiRubble slope from 12 m to a coral slope; sharks often at 25 m and deeperMild to very strong; strongest at full and new moon
Gili Biaha (Shark Cave)30 min from Padang Bai; about 4 km from TepekongTerraces to about 40 m; cave entrance at 12 m, running 18 m backCorners exposed; visited only in safe conditions

Those are operator accounts, and they disagree. Gangga's dive page calls Mimpang a drift "suitable for most divers", while its own article warns that the current there can be strong "even for advanced divers". Water WorxX rates Tepekong, Mimpang and Biaha as for experienced divers only. Take the stricter reading.

Certification is a floor, not a pass. Gangga notes you need a card good for 25 m or more to reach Mimpang's sharks, and for Tepekong it asks for an Open Water or Advanced card plus 10 further logged dives. Visibility claims run from 15 m to 30 m, depending on who is writing.

The nickname tells you the rest. The spot about 50 meters south of the Tepekong rim is the Toilet, because a strong south-setting current can carry a group into down currents there and force an abort. Water WorxX warns of the strongest flow around full and new moon, and Dune Penida says it avoids those days when it crosses from Nusa Penida. Check the moon before you pick your week.

A research diver went missing at Gili Tepekong in 2020, and current is the likely cause

The clearest record of this water comes from a research dive, not a brochure. On 12 December 2020 a shark-tracking team went to the west side of Gili Tepekong to swap a data receiver placed at about 32 meters. Team rules required an Advanced Open Water card and at least 50 prior dives. Two of the divers were experienced, certified instructors.

The surface current was strong on arrival at about 09:30, so the team waited an hour until the sea looked calmer, then went in together at 10:42. Within roughly ten minutes one of the six had become separated, and the team's joint statement says a strong current was the probable reason. The other five were back on the surface within 18 minutes.

The team called the search and rescue agency at about 11:20. Two divers who went back in that afternoon were limited to 30 minutes because the water was still running hard. Kompas TV reported that the search ended after seven days without finding the diver.

One case proves no statistic, and this was a deep working dive rather than a tour. What it shows about Candidasa diving is narrow and useful: a calm surface here says little about the next ten minutes at 30 meters. Carry a surface marker and a signaling device, stay with the guide, and accept the call when a boat turns back.

Padang Bai, not Candidasa, is where newer divers and macro photographers belong

About six kilometers across the bay, the diving changes character. Gangga describes the Blue Lagoon sites as a very gentle drift for all levels, five minutes by boat from Padang Bai harbor. Water WorxX, based there, calls the area its house reef, with six to eight sites depending on the page, and lists mild to moderate current on its shallow coastal reef. Between dives you go back to shore for coffee.

Not everything here is soft. Tanjung Sari, at the south end of the lagoon, slopes to about 30 m and catches tidal current, which brings schools, reef sharks and the odd sunfish. Wobbegongs turn up in the cooler months, May to September by Water WorxX's count. The Ferry Channel dive starts by a beacon on the route the Lombok ferries use, so keep to your guide's plan.

The photographers' site is the Jetty at Tanah Ampo, in the middle of Amuk Bay and 20 minutes from Padang Bai. It is an abandoned cruise pier, dived at 10 to 18 m around its pillars with 10 to 15 m of visibility. Water WorxX lists mimic and blue-ringed octopus, frogfish and Rhinopias, and Zublu says sightings are especially common during and after the cold season.

Padang Bai is also a working port, with 17 ferries on the Lembar crossing and 12 trips a day in ANTARA's September 2026 report. Expect a harbor town rather than a resort. Water WorxX itself suggests staying a night or two there rather than driving in, and for most non-experts that is the better way into Candidasa diving.

Candidasa water temperature drops hard just as the mola mola arrive

Do not plan your suit from a beach thermometer. These figures are triangulated from operators' guides and a forecast site, not a government series for this bay. Gangga Divers lists 28°C from November to July and 21°C from August to October. Zublu gives 23 to 28°C for the area. Dune Penida just says "cool", dropping further in sunfish season.

Surf-Forecast puts Padang Bai's sea temperature at 28 to 30°C around early January and 25 to 28°C around mid-August. Surface averages cannot show a cold layer below. Gangga's 21°C may describe a cold spell more than a typical dive, but it is the number that ends a dive early. Pack for it, and read the travel wetsuit guide before an August trip.

The sunfish window varies by source: July to October from Water WorxX at Tepekong and from Dune Penida, August to October at Mimpang from Gangga, and "occasionally" May to November from Water WorxX at Mimpang. None of it is a promise. diving.DE recommends reserving between July and November, and its base takes 25 divers at most.

Rain matters less to Candidasa diving than current. Bali's climate station expected the 2026/27 rainy season to spread across the island in November, peak in February and run until April. Zublu and Dune Penida both treat the sites as year-round. Ask a center before a February trip how often its boats are actually going out.

What Candidasa diving costs next to a day trip to Tulamben or Nusa Penida

Prices are the operators' own, read on 4 November 2026, for a two-dive trip. Three published sheets show how differently Candidasa diving gets sold.

Two dives atWater WorxX, Padang Bai (own gear)Southern Dreams, Manggisdiving.DE, Candidasa
Gili Mimpang or Tepekong75 EURIDR 1,600,00085.50 EUR
Blue Lagoon area60 EURIDR 1,600,00085.50 EUR
Tulamben (USAT Liberty)70 EURIDR 1,600,000106 EUR
North Nusa Penida85 EURIDR 3,000,000126 EUR, 4 divers minimum
Manta Point110 EURIDR 3,000,000146 EUR, 6 divers minimum

The diving.DE column is a calculation: two dives at 33 EUR each, plus its published transfer of 19.50, 40, 60 or 80 EUR. Inclusions differ. Water WorxX includes guide, tanks and weights, with full rental at 20 EUR a day. Southern Dreams includes a private guide, tanks, weights, transfer, lunch and marine park fees, with free pick-up in Candidasa and Manggis.

Two things follow. The Tulamben wreck costs about the same as a local trip at two of the three, so a Candidasa stay does not rule it out. Nusa Penida's premium is real, and a group minimum can cancel your day. Foreign visitors also pay Bali's IDR 150,000 tourist levy.

That "marine park fee" deserves a question. Press coverage names Karangasem among Bali's marine conservation areas without saying where its lines run in Amuk Bay. Ask what the charge on your invoice pays for, and treat any rule in your briefing as binding.

The hyperbaric chamber for Candidasa is a road trip away, so settle the plan first

Plan on leaving town for treatment. One chamber is at RSUP Prof. dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah in Denpasar, the former Sanglah hospital, and the 2003 engineers put Candidasa about 42 km from that city. Its hyperbaric clinic lists registration Monday to Thursday 07:00 to 13:30 and Friday 07:00 to 13:00, closed on holidays. The switchboard is (0361) 227911, and the hospital lists a 24-hour emergency service.

Clinic hours are not an emergency promise. There may be a second option too. In July 2019 Coconuts reported a new center at Kasih Ibu Hospital in Saba, Gianyar, with a chamber for 6 + 2 people, and a doctor there said in a May 2024 interview that three Bali hospitals had chambers. Confirm by phone that it is running.

DAN's July 2025 chamber bulletin explains why that call matters. It says a chamber "may occasionally be unavailable" through malfunctions, staff changes or maintenance. It also describes an October 2024 night evacuation by sea from Nusa Penida in bad weather, with the patient reaching hospital at 2 a.m. Before any Candidasa diving, ask your operator which chamber it uses, who drives, and whether oxygen is on the boat.

Indonesia's official tourism site lists 112 for general emergencies from mobile phones, 118 or 119 for ambulance and 115 for BASARNAS, the search and rescue agency. Save them, and check what your dive insurance pays for evacuation and chamber time.

Candidasa works for a dive month, not as a remote-work base

The town's appeal is that very little happens. The 2003 engineers already described it as a quiet alternative to the south, and diving.DE sells it as far from the party scene around Kuta. Getting in is simple enough: diving.DE puts the airport at Denpasar 50 to 60 km away, and ORCA says about 1.5 hours by car.

For work, plan around what is missing. Goats on the Road's list of 15 Bali coworking spaces and Grey's list of 11 include none in Candidasa or elsewhere in Karangasem. Rent and internet figures for the town are too thin to print, so ask for a speed test from the actual room and carry mobile data as backup.

A tourist stay also has limits if you are working, which the guide to Indonesia's remote worker visa sets out. For another dive base on this coast, compare Amed first. Candidasa diving suits someone who can go offline between dives.

Padang Bai, Tulamben or Sanur beat Candidasa for most Bali divers

Candidasa is a narrow choice. It fits a confident diver who wants sharks and big water a short ride from a resort room. Most other people have a better address on Bali.

Stay, on the other hand, if the Canyon sounds like the point rather than the problem. Book a week so a bad moon or a turned-back boat costs you little, and start at Blue Lagoon or the Jetty so the guide can see how you dive.

Candidasa dive operators: three of the seven are in town

The Candidasa operator list holds 7 records. The list's name is broader than the town. By their own addresses, three are in Candidasa itself: Gangga Divers at Lotus Bungalows, ORCA Dive Club at Puri Bagus and diving.DE at Candi Beach Resort, which SSI lists under its company name, PT. Penjelajahan Laut Biru.

One, Southern Dreams, is on Jl. Pantai Buitan in Manggis, next to the Karma Royal hotel. Three are in Padang Bai: Water WorxX, which SSI files under Manggis, Livingseas and We Do Ocean. That last one describes itself chiefly as a reef-restoration organization started by Padang Bai instructors, so ask before treating it as a regular dive shop.

Six appear in SSI's register, read on 13 September 2026, and Gangga is a Green Fins Gold member, read on 14 August 2026. All seven publish a website. A listing proves an affiliation on a date, and nothing about boats, guides or whether a course runs this season; which registers can be read sets out the limits.

FAQ: Candidasa diving

Is Candidasa diving suitable for beginners?

Mostly not at the islets. Water WorxX rates Gili Tepekong, Mimpang and Biaha for experienced divers only, and Gangga Divers says Tepekong is not for beginners. Newer divers should use the Blue Lagoon sites at Padang Bai, which Gangga describes as a very gentle drift for all levels. Courses and first dives belong there, not in the Canyon.

When is the best time for Candidasa diving?

It runs all year, and the choice depends on what you want. Mola mola are reported from July to October, when the water is coolest. Bali's climate station expected the 2026/27 rainy season to spread in November, peak in February and last until April. In any month, plan around the moon, since full and new moon bring the strongest current at the islets.

How cold is the water for Candidasa diving?

Figures differ, so pack for the low one. Gangga Divers lists 28°C from November to July and 21°C from August to October. Zublu gives 23 to 28°C for the area. Surface figures from Surf-Forecast bottom out at 25 to 28°C in mid-August. These are triangulated from operators and a forecast site, not a government series, and a surface number cannot show a cold layer below.

Where is the nearest hyperbaric chamber to Candidasa?

Plan on leaving town. Prof. Ngoerah hospital in Denpasar, formerly Sanglah, has a chamber, and its hyperbaric clinic registers patients on weekdays until early afternoon. Coconuts reported another center at Kasih Ibu Hospital in Saba, Gianyar, in 2019, and a doctor there said in 2024 that three Bali hospitals have chambers. Ask your Candidasa operator which one its emergency plan uses.

Can you see manta rays from Candidasa?

Yes, but only as a long day trip to Nusa Penida, not at the Candidasa islets. Water WorxX charges 110 EUR for two dives at Manta Point from Padang Bai, and diving.DE needs at least six divers for its south Nusa Penida trip from Candidasa. If mantas are the point of your Bali trip, base in Sanur or on Nusa Penida instead.

Is Candidasa a good base for remote work?

Only for a short dive stay. Neither of two Bali coworking roundups lists a space in Candidasa, and the airport is about 1.5 hours away by car. Rent and speed figures for the town are thin, so test the actual room's connection before paying for a month. Anyone needing a desk and a community should work elsewhere and visit for the diving.
