How to read this list, and what each kind of source is worth

This page carries 10 schools. 6 are in the register and 9 name a training body. Read 2026-09-21.

6 are in the IKO and VDWS registers, which are third parties saying the business is listed and nothing more. Everything else is what the school states on its own site, quoted and dated. Nobody assessed any of them.

Kite schools in and around Kalpitiya, from two kinds of source at once: every school IKO and VDWS list here, 6 of them, from directories read on 21 September 2026, and four more found and read on their own sites on 19 August 2026. IKO files the lagoon's schools under their villages as well as under Kalpitiya, and Kappalady, Kandakuliya and Kudawa, up to 14 km from the town, are counted as here. Both bodies publish their directories, so a school appearing in one has its affiliation from the body rather than from its own website, and that is all the directory settles: it says nothing about teaching, languages, insurance or safety cover, and nobody assessed anybody. Absence means less here than on the dive pages. IKO lists 306 affiliated centres in 64 countries and VDWS 427 stations in 26 countries, both read on 21 September 2026, and IKO's own site says it affiliates more centres than its directory carries, so a school missing from this page may be affiliated and absent from the list, or teaching under a body neither register covers. It is not a judgement about the school.

On a dive page, Green Fins means a named third party visited the business and scored it. Nothing on this page is like that. What is here is a register entry for 6 of them, and for the rest what the school states on its own site, quoted and dated.

What absence means here. For the 6 taken from the registers, absence means the register does not carry the business, which is a statement about a list. For the other 4 it means the school is not in these registers, which says nothing about the school.

An equipment brand is not a training body. Several schools show Duotone, Cabrinha, Naish or North prominently. Those are gear sponsorships and certify nothing, so they are not recorded as affiliations, and a school that names only a brand shows a blank here.

A register entry can be opened; a claim cannot. Every affiliation taken from a register links to that body's own page for that business, so the listing can be read at the source instead of taken from here. Where a school's own words are shown instead, they are a claim with nothing behind them but the school, and they are labelled that way.

Why these registers and not others. A register earns its place here by being enumerable and citable: it has to list who is in it, and each entry has to have a page that names the business, so a reader can check the claim instead of taking it from us. Most do neither. Green Fins is the case that shows the difference, because its members are the best evidence in this directory and its member pages render the same bytes for a real centre and an invented one, so a Green Fins fact is stored with a centre id and never cited as a link. Twenty-five were tried and nine answer: what each one returned, with the date it was asked.

  1. Each school's own website, opened between 2026-08-14 and 2026-08-24. Every quoted sentence was read on the page linked in that school's row, not in a search result and not on a booking portal. Among them surfschool-srilanka.com, diaskiteschool.com, kitecentersrilanka.com.
  2. How this list was assembled. Two kinds of source, kept apart. IKO lists 306 affiliated centres in 64 countries; VDWS lists 427 stations in 26 countries, enumerated in one request from the endpoint behind the map, which is how a school's affiliation reaches registry evidence. Then the school's own website for everything the directory does not carry, quoted and dated. No aggregator, booking portal or review was used as a source. All three registers were re-read whole on 2026-09-01 and these are their sizes on that date; a register is a moving list and this sentence carries the date so it cannot go quietly out of date.
