Dauin Diving: Muck Sites, Apo Island and the Season

What muck diving here actually is

The Dauin coast is volcanic black sand on a slope, not reef, and that is the point. Operators describe Dauin North and Dauin South as shore dives over muck at 5 to 25 m with scattered debris and artificial structures that hold frogfish, pipefish, nudibranchs, seahorses and octopus.

Car Wrecks is the site people book for: two cars sunk at 24 to 28 m among concrete pipes and steel boxes, colonised and crawling with macro life. It is deeper than the rest of the coast and the depth is the limiting factor on bottom time rather than the conditions.

Masaplod is the one that is not muck (a marine sanctuary with coral cover at 5 to 30 m, fusiliers and snappers and turtles) and it is the site that breaks up a week of staring at sand. Water sits between 25 and 30 °C across the year on operators' published figures.

A practical consequence: this is a destination for a guide and a camera, not for drift diving. Nobody finds a wonderpus on their own on the second dive.

Apo Island, and getting there

Apo Island lies 7 km off the south-eastern tip of Negros and about 30 km south of Dumaguete, and boats from Dauin take roughly 30 minutes. It is a community-managed marine sanctuary and the reason many people come to this coast at all: hard coral, turtles and current, which is the opposite of the muck slope on the mainland.

A visitor fee applies and the published figures do not agree. Reports give PHP 100 and PHP 300 for foreign visitors, with a reduced rate for minors and PHP 10 for Dauin residents presenting a community tax certificate, since the island falls under the municipality of Dauin. Ask the dive shop what it will be on the day and carry pesos; it is collected at a registration office on the beach, not by the boat.

When to go to Dauin, and the muck-diving season

PAGASA, the Philippine weather bureau, splits the year into a rainy season from June to November and a dry season from December to May. That is the national picture rather than a Negros forecast, and the Visayas sit where tropical cyclones cross, so the second half of the year carries the weather risk.

For diving specifically it matters less than it does for a beach holiday. Muck sites are shallow and sheltered; what a storm takes away is the Apo Island crossing, which is an open 30 minutes of water and the first thing cancelled.

Green Fins dive centers in Dauin

The Green Fins register, read on 2026-08-14, carried 4 members in Dauin, and none of the 4 has been assessed in person: every one is a Digital Member, which means registered without a visit. The tier column on the operator list is therefore identical for all of them and carries no information.

Of the operator sites, 10 of the 15 responded. Training agencies named on the pages that did: PADI on 4, SSI on 4 and TDI on 1. Not one of the 15 publishes which languages their instructors teach in. On a muck coast the questions that decide a week are how many divers per guide and whether the guide knows the sites in the dark: neither of which any register carries.
