Insta360 vs GoPro: The Best Camera for Watersports in 2026

Insta360 and GoPro take different routes to the same water. In short: Insta360's X5 is the pick if you want immersive 360 footage you can reframe later, and it is natively waterproof deeper than a GoPro Hero (15m vs 10m); GoPro's Hero still wins on stabilization and has by far the biggest mount and accessory ecosystem. Insta360 also makes a traditional action cam (Ace Pro 2, 12m native) if you do not want 360. Both need a dive housing for scuba, and models move fast, so check the latest.

Insta360 in short

Insta360's headline trick is 360 capture: the X5 films everything around you at once, so you point the camera roughly and reframe the angle later in the app, which is transformative for solo divers and surfers who cannot aim and ride at the same time. It is also natively waterproof to 15m, the deepest of the mainstream action cams, with strong low-light performance for murky water.

If you would rather shoot traditional wide footage, Insta360's Ace Pro 2 is a strong GoPro rival with a big Leica-branded sensor and a 12m native rating. The trade-off with the X5 is a learning curve in editing, and 360 files are large.

GoPro in short

GoPro's advantages are stabilization, ubiquity and the ecosystem. Its stabilization is class-leading, with a slight edge under extreme vibration, and the range of first- and third-party mounts, housings, trays and mask mounts is unmatched, which matters if you already own GoPro kit. Native waterproofing is 10m, so anything deeper needs a housing. For 360, GoPro's answer is the MAX 2.

If you shoot traditional footage, prioritise the smoothest stabilization, or already live in the GoPro mount ecosystem, the Hero is the safe choice.

What both need for scuba, and where DJI fits

For scuba past the native rating, both need a dedicated dive housing, typically rated to around 40 to 60m, plus a red filter to restore colour below roughly 5m.
