How we chose
September is the month we would pick ourselves, and the list explains why rather than just asserting it. September is the best value-to-conditions ratio of the year. Water is still summer-warm across the northern hemisphere, the crowds have gone home, and the first autumn swells arrive. Every base here is included because its own guide names September as part of its working window, not because the weather is generally nice, and where a place is marginal we say so rather than padding the list to a round number.

Why is September the best month for European surf?
Because the two variables line up. North Atlantic swell starts arriving with real power in autumn, while the sea is still at its warmest after summer, and the July to August crowds have gone. Ericeira and Hossegor both rate September to October as their prime window.
Where is the wind best in September?
The Ceara coast in Brazil: Jericoacoara's sweet spot is September to November and Prea peaks August to November. Paros is at the tail of the meltemi, and Zanzibar's Kusi runs into September or October.
