Two chemicals in particular, oxybenzone and octinoxate, are linked to coral harm and are now banned in places like Hawaii and Palau. The catch: "reef-safe" is an unregulated marketing term, so you have to read the ingredients. Cover up first, sunscreen second

The most effective, most reef-friendly sun protection is to need less sunscreen: wear a UPF rash guard or wetsuit, a hat and sunglasses on the boat, and seek shade in peak sun. Then apply mineral sunscreen only to the exposed bits (face, ears, back of neck, hands, feet). This protects your skin best and puts the least into the water, the real win-win.
