Best beginner kite spots

Learning to kite means flat, shallow water, steady wind and good schools. These are the beginner-friendly kite bases we cover, mostly flat-water lagoons with a reliable season, each linked to its full guide.
Figures are indicative and "as of 2026"; each linked guide has the verified detail and sources.

How we chose

Three things decide whether a spot teaches you to kite or humiliates you: flat or lightly chopped water, wind that arrives on a schedule rather than in squalls, and space to drift downwind without hitting a reef, a boat or a rock. Everything here has all three. That rules out spots we like a lot personally, including several with better wind statistics, because gusty offshore wind over shallow reef is where beginners get hurt. Where a place only works at certain tides, we say so, because a lagoon that drains at low water is a half-day spot.

Picking a place to learn to kite

FAQ

Where is the easiest place to learn to kitesurf?

Flat-water lagoons are easiest, so Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka, Dakhla in Morocco and El Gouna in Egypt are among the best places to learn, with shallow, flat water and plenty of schools. Cumbuco in Brazil and Mui Ne in Vietnam add reliable season wind at low cost.

When is the wind season?

It varies by spot, and the linked guide details each one. As a rule, Brazil (Cumbuco, Prea) blows strongest around July to January, Sri Lanka's Kalpitiya runs on its two monsoon windows, Egypt and Morocco are strong through the northern summer, and Mui Ne peaks roughly November to April.
