SafetyWing and World Nomads solve different problems. In short: SafetyWing is a cheap, subscription-style plan built for continuous nomadic living, with an Adventure Sports add-on for scuba; World Nomads is adventure-travel insurance covering more than 150 activities, scuba among them, and suits shorter, high-activity trips. For open-ended nomad life, SafetyWing usually wins on price and flexibility; for an action-packed trip, World Nomads is worth the premium. Read the policy limits and confirm current prices.

Best for

Kitesurfers, read this before you buy SafetyWing. Kite-Surfing appears by name on the exclusion list in SafetyWing Nomad Insurance's description of coverage, alongside cave diving, cliff jumping, whitewater rafting, spelunking, parachuting and paragliding. If kiting is the reason you travel, that single line matters more than any price comparison on this page. Genki, by contrast, names kitesurfing among the activities its Traveler plan covers, with conditions. Read both policies yourself and confirm the current wording, because this is the kind of clause that decides whether a claim is paid. Checked 6 August 2026 against SafetyWing's description of coverage and Genki Traveler.
How to read this: prices, plans and coverage change often. Treat every figure as "as of 2026" and confirm the current terms on the provider's own site before you buy. Some links may be affiliate links; see our disclosure.

SafetyWing in short

SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance is a rolling 28-day subscription that auto-renews until you cancel, which fits open-ended nomad life where you do not know your return date. It is cheap for what it is, and its diving exclusion does not apply to PADI, NAUI or SSI certified divers, though kitesurfing is excluded outright. It is travel-medical cover, so read the limits, and for serious diving add dedicated dive-accident cover.

Three further catches sit in the same section and are worth more than the price difference: only PADI, NAUI and SSI are named, so CMAS, SDI, RAID and BSAC divers should get confirmation in writing; cave diving is excluded outright with no exception; and cover fails where the activity is "performed in a professional capacity or for any wage, reward, or profit", which catches anyone doing a divemaster for accommodation or free courses. The document also never mentions a recompression chamber, which is exactly why serious divers add dedicated dive-accident cover.

For most nomads living abroad indefinitely, SafetyWing is the flexible, affordable default.

World Nomads in short

World Nomads is built around adventurous travel: its plans cover more than 150 activities, including scuba, without a separate add-on, which is convenient if your trip is packed with high-risk activities. It is priced and structured more like trip insurance than an indefinite subscription, so it suits a defined adventure trip better than open-ended living.

If your months are full of diving, trekking and other adventure sports and you want it all covered on one plan, World Nomads earns its premium.

The honest take

Match the cover to your life, not the brand. For continuous, open-ended nomad living on a budget, SafetyWing is usually the better fit; for a shorter, activity-dense trip, World Nomads bundles the adventure cover neatly. Divers on either should confirm the scuba depth and certification limits in writing and consider dedicated dive-accident cover such as DAN on top.

Which should you pick?

FAQ

Which is cheaper, SafetyWing or World Nomads?

SafetyWing is generally cheaper for continuous cover: its Essential plan is USD 62.72 per 4 weeks for ages 18 to 39, as a rolling subscription. World Nomads does not publish a monthly rate, it quotes per trip from your age, nationality, destination and dates, so get a real quote. It is structured for trips rather than open-ended living. Compare current quotes for your age and destination.

Which covers scuba diving better?

World Nomads covers more than 150 activities including scuba on its Standard and Explorer plans, which is convenient for activity-packed trips. SafetyWing's policy excludes sub aqua pursuits unless you are PADI, NAUI or SSI certified, or accompanied by an instructor shallower than 10 metres, and it excludes kitesurfing outright. It also offers a paid Adventure Sports add-on. Either way, confirm the depth and certification limits in writing, and add dedicated dive-accident cover for serious diving.

Which is better for long-term travel?

SafetyWing, in most cases: its rolling subscription is designed for open-ended nomadic living, whereas World Nomads is more trip-oriented. For a defined adventure trip, World Nomads can be the better bundle.

  3. Not confirmed: we could not verify a monthly price range for World Nomads at source, because it quotes per trip from your age, nationality, destination and dates rather than publishing a monthly rate. An earlier version of this page stated "roughly USD 60 to 90 per month"; that figure is unverified and has been removed rather than left standing. Get a real quote for your own trip.
