How we chose
We selected for resident populations at known sites, not for chance encounters, and we excluded anywhere the sighting depends on baiting or feeding. That is not squeamishness: fed sharks behave differently around divers, and the practice is restricted or banned in several of these countries. Where a species is seasonal or depth-dependent, the linked guide states the window.

Where can I reliably dive with sharks?
Malapascua is the most dependable single site we cover: pelagic thresher sharks come up to an offshore cleaning station essentially every morning of the year, though the dive is advanced at 25 to 30 metres and pre-sunrise. Sipadan's wall has resident whitetip and grey reef sharks, and the Perhentians deliver blacktips on much gentler sites.
Do I need an advanced certification to dive with sharks?
It depends on the site. Malapascua's thresher dive is genuinely advanced and deep, so plan any certification upgrade before you count on joining the boat. The Perhentians, by contrast, are warm and mostly gentle, and whale shark encounters in the Maldives and Tofo often happen on snorkel-based trips rather than on scuba.
