Malapascua in short

Malapascua's claim to fame is unique: thresher sharks turn up almost every morning at the Monad Shoal cleaning station, so divers do a dark, early boat dive to see them, which no other accessible spot reliably offers. It is a small island best treated as a focused dive trip; the threshers are year-round, with January to April the calmest window and the typhoon season (July to November) the riskiest.

Moalboal in short

Moalboal, on Cebu's southwest coast, is easier and cheaper: a permanent bait ball of millions of sardines and resident turtles sit metres off Panagsama Beach, so you can snorkel or dive the spectacle from shore at rock-bottom prices. With easy road access and a small cafe-and-dive-shop scene, it works well as a low-cost base rather than just a trip.
