You do not need experience to raft: a guided Class II to III river is exciting and manageable for first-timers. These are the more beginner-friendly whitewater destinations we cover, each linked to its full guide. Always go with a reputable, licensed operator and wear the issued PFD and helmet.
For the checked numbers and their sources, follow the guide for that place.

How we chose

For a first time on moving water the grade matters less than the operator and the rescue setup, so we selected for rivers with well-established commercial operations, a sensible beginner section, and a safe swim if you come out of the boat. Class III appears here only where the run is short and well supported. Grades shift with water level, sometimes by a full class.

FAQ

Can a total beginner go whitewater rafting?

Yes. Guided Class II to III trips are designed for first-timers: your guide steers and instructs, and the rapids are exciting but manageable. Save Class IV and above for once you have experience, and always book a reputable, licensed operator and wear the issued PFD and helmet.

Which is the best river for a first raft?

The Ottawa River in Canada is a classic beginner-friendly choice: big, warm, forgiving water and a huge safety-focused rafting industry. Bali rafting, Cagayan de Oro and the gentler Ganges sections at Rishikesh are also easy, cheap places to start.
